Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to provide peer support counseling services and therapeutic activities to patients/clients (consumers in the hospital), in areas/wards of the hospital identified as having specific needs involving recovery and trauma informed care. This position will function at the intermediate level of care, under moderate to general supervision provided by a licensed psychologist or a licensed professional clinician.


Education:  Completion of 60 credit hours at an accredited college or university including 15 credit hours in a human service program. The program must have included either a supervised practicum in providing counseling or other therapeutic services to the mentally ill or at least nine credit hours in psychology, including abnormal psychology.

Experience:  Two (II)  years of experience providing counseling or other therapeutic services to the mentally ill.


1.  Candidates for these classifications may substitute one year of experience providing counseling or other therapeutic services in a mental health setting under the supervision of a licensed professional staff member or a master’s prepared mental health professional for the required practicum or for the 100 hours of clinical supervision and 25 hours of inservice training.

2.  Candidates for these classifications may substitute additional college education in a human service program for the required experience at the rate of 30 credits for one year for up to two years of the required experience.

3.  Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Mental or Behavioral Health Counseling classifications or Mental or Behavioral Health Nursing and Specialist specialty codes in the Counseling field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education. 


The selected employee must possess one or more of the following certifications:

Selective Qualifications:

1). Certified as a WRAP (Wellness, Recovery, Action Plan) Facilitator

2). Certified as a NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Support Group Facilitator Trainer

3). Certified as a Peer Recovery Support Coach4). Completion of Peer Recovery Advocate Training.


The desirable applicant must have experience with serious mental health issues (e.g. depression, bi-polar).

For education obtained outside the U.S., a copy of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service must accompany the application. Contractual employees who works for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
