Introduction

The Maryland State Retirement Agency is the administrator of the Maryland StateRetirement and Pension System (“System”). The System is a defined benefit retirement system covering governmental employees within the State of Maryland. The System is composed of twelve (12) separate retirement and pension systems with over 50 different rule sets. The System has over 397,000 participants (customers), including192,000 members who are actively employed and participating in the System, 165,000 payees who receive a monthly payment from the System, and 40,000 vested members who are no longer actively employed but have earned a benefit that will become payable at a future date. The Agency is seeking to fill the Administrative Officer III positions in Benefits Processing.

During the probationary period this position will work 100% at the office of the Maryland State Retirement Agency. After the probationary period and at the discretion of the Director, this position may be eligible to telework one to two days per pay period.

POSITION DUTIES

These positions serve as staff level employees on a small team of professional staff responsible for performing various functions related to retirement.

Position duties may include:

• Preparing and reviewing retirement applications to determine if they are properly completed. 

• Reviewing member accounts to determine eligibility for retirement and to validate salary and service credit. 

• Calculating the member’s average final compensation. 

• Submitting appropriate transactions related to account audits. 

• Reconciling transactions. 

The chosen candidates must have strong organizational skills as well as excellent attention to detail, and communication skills.  The ideal candidates would have or develop an understanding of retirement law.  To be successful, the chosen candidates must be motivated and dedicated to producing results and be committed to providing the best service possible to your teammates and to participants of the System.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Three years of administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to two years of the required experience. 

2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from a college or university for the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included the regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.  

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferredqualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

  •  At least one (1) year of experience using Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel,Outlook)
  •  At least one (1) year of experience reviewing data, calculating benefits, and reconciling data and money.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
