Main Purpose of Job

The server/virtualization engineer’s role is to ensure the stable operation of the data center infrastructure. This includes provisioning new physical and/or virtual servers, optimizing server performance (as part of its life cycle support), providing Operating System/patch management support, and troubleshooting incidents on VMware infrastructure environments located in the two data centers. Candidates will also monitor server resource (CPU, Memory, RAM) consumption, and plan for capacity expansion. The candidate will also monitor the availability and reliability of the environment to support all pre-established SLAs. Employees’ secondary duties will include implementing and maintaining security measures to protect State’s virtualized environments and creating/updating detailed and accurate SOPs/documentation. Job entails working in a data center, working at heights, lifting, and relocating equipment. This position may be subject to call-in 24 hours a day and may be required to travel to field locations and have access to an automobile in the event a state vehicle cannot be provided. The candidate for this job needs to have excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills and strong communication and collaboration skills.

POSITION DUTIES

Build, deploy and manage new and existing servers in the data center and perform monthly operating systems upgrades.

Ensure the security of the server infrastructure by implementing State Security best practices regarding privacy, and regulatory compliance.

Develop and maintain the technical documentation about the current environment and automate mundane tasks as needed

Collaborate and troubleshoot incidents related to the data center environment. This includes the underlying hardware, VMware environment, and the operating system.

Schedule, and perform software and hardware upgrades, patches, and reconfigurations by following Change Management processes.

Rack, stack, cable, label and provide feet-on-ground support for the data center environment as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Five years of experience, three years of experience planning, integrating and maintaining software and hardware for local or wide area computer networks supporting 1,000 or more users and an additional two years of experience in planning, installing and maintaining data communications network lines and devices.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute completion of high school or a high school equivalency certificate and completion of a certification program in Network Administration, such as Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Juniper Networks Certification Program (JNCP) or equivalent certification program for the additional two years of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute experience on a year-for-year basis: in planning, installing and maintaining data communications network lines and devices for graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

3. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree in computer information technology, management information systems, or other information technology related field, to include course work in local or wide area computer network, from an accredited college or university and three years of experience planning, integrating and maintaining software and hardware for local or wide area computer networks supporting 1,000 or more users for the required experience.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in Network Analyst classifications or Network Integration and Management specialty codes in the Information Technology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience. Candidates substituting military experience should be honorably discharged.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to candidates who have two or more of the following:

Proven experience as a VMware Administrator  

Proven experience as a Windows Server Manager  

Certification in VMware and/or Microsoft Operating System

Experience with Active Directory, Group Policy, and security best practices

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where the employee can be reached. Employees may be furnished with a pager or cell phone.

Employees may occasionally be required to travel to field locations and must have access to an automobile in the event a state vehicle cannot be provided. Standard mileage allowance will be paid for use of a privately owned vehicle.
