POSITION DUTIES

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Fishing and Boating Services is accepting applications for three seasonal/contractual Natural Resources Technician I position(s). These positions will support the Freshwater Fisheries and Hatcheries Division. The assigned work location for these positions will be the Joseph Manning Fish Hatchery in Brandywine, MD. Occasional overtime and weekend work may be required.

The one 6-month position will participate in a restoration effort conducted by DNR’s Freshwater Fisheries and
Hatcheries Division. Primary duties will be to support all aspects of hatchery operations which are listed below.
Job responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
• Pond water quality monitoring
• Juvenile fish recruitment/inventory/stocking
• Pond, building, equipment, and vehicle maintenance
• Grass cutting, weed eating, general grounds maintenance and trash removal
• Providing hatchery personnel with assistance and other duties as assigned


The two 2-month position(s) will assist in the Maryland DNR’s Freshwater Fisheries and Hatcheries Division,
Anadromous Restoration program, American shad gill netting project. Work hours are dependent on tide;
generally, an eight-hour day is worked between 3:00pm to 12:00am. Work will take place Sunday through
Friday. Applicants will assist gill netting on the Potomac River. These positions are a great way to gain fisheries
fieldwork experience.
Job responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
● Maintenance and the deployment of gill nets from a boat
● Removing American shad and other fish species from gill nets
● Aid in the strip spawning of American shad
● Assisting in data collection
● Data entry
● Sample preparation

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Two years of experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute the completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 credit hours must be in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, forest technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study for the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior fisheries experience
  • Experience using sampling equipment (trawl, seines, etc)
  • Laboratory experience with microscopes. 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Persons appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Occasional overtime and weekend work may be required.
