Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to provide network support for the DJS network planning, integrating, maintenance, support of computer applications and systems, computer and communication equipment, computer peripheral equipment and security systems for the Western Maryland Region. Responsibilities include and are not limited to Service Plus incidents, installation of network equipment for offices/facilities to function effectively and efficiently. Position recommends for site visits when necessary, to the various field offices and facilities statewide. Locations include the following Youth Camps, Garrett Children Center, Backbone, Mountain Youth, and Green Ridge. DJS facilities such as Western MD Children Center, Victor Cullen Center and DJS offices such Cumberland, YCHQ, Frederick, Hagerstown, Oakland. Duties will also include acting as the ON-Call Administer in the evenings for two weeks in each quarter. Additionally, the position will provide support for the inventory processes.

POSITION DUTIES

Operating Systems and Network Support: Installs, test, debugs and maintains new and revised operating system software. Specifically this position: images computers and laptops; evaluates and tests upgraded network systems once installed; monitors computer system performance and utilization; modifies operating systems as necessary; plans and participates in long and short term studies to determine feasibility of converting or modifying operating system requirements; installs communication links to computers on network; provides infrastructure support for servers, network switches, router hardware; automates installation of operating system software and security updates; keeps up to-date with computer technology systems, equipment and software changes and make recommendations to management to keep our systems current; prepares and assembles technical documentation when troubleshooting errors or problems from the knowledge bases websites, and studies technical literature and attends workshops, seminars and trainings to keep up-to-date on latest technology. Performs other related duties. 

Customer Support: Resolves issues related to operating systems, networking connections and equipment for system users. Specifically, provides Tier 2 phone and email support to resolve user hardware, network and technical issues; recommends procedures and standards for application interfaces; recommends operating system procedures; and resolve user software, hardware, network and technical problems. Performs other related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Two years of experience maintaining and modifying operating systems for multipurpose, multi-tasking computers.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute thirty credit hours from an accredited college or university in Computer Information Technology, Computer Science, Management Information Systems or other information technology related field to include course work in machine or assembler computer languages, and operating system and data communication technology for multipurpose multi-tasking computers for one year of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute experience operating multipurpose, multi-tasking computer systems; or scheduling, controlling input and output or maintaining a tape library to process data on multipurpose, multi-tasking computer systems; or converting data from project specifications by developing program code using third generation or other generally accepted computer programming languages; or designing, developing and maintaining communications networks on a year-for-year basis for a high school education.

3. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Information Technology, Computer Science, Management Information Systems or other information technology related field to include course work in machine or assembler computer languages, and operating system and data communication technology for multipurpose, multi-tasking computers and one year of experience maintaining and modifying operating systems for multipurpose, multi-tasking computers for the required experience.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the Computer Systems Operations classifications or Computer Systems Operations specialty codes in the Information Technology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

  • Experience with installing, testing, debugging, and maintaining hardware, new and revised operating system software or data communication software.

  • Experience with monitoring computer system performance and utilization and develops plans to modify and upgrade operating systems.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where the employee can be reached.
