Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this key position is to provide administrative secretarial services to the Community Justice staff in Baltimore County as well as Region 3.

POSITION DUTIES

The ability to assume responsibility and take initiative plays a significant role in this function, as does the ability to exercise good judgment. Composition of correspondence, typing at a superior level, and effectively communicating in a courteous manner are extremely important functions. A good workable relationship with superiors, coworkers, and the public is necessary. Dependability is a must. To master the complexities of the job at least three months of on-the-job training should be structured. This is due to the complexity and size of Central Maryland Region, and the varying demands of the job and content of the work. The element of the job, which takes the longest to learn, is the structure of the Department of Juvenile Justice, the multi-functioning staff and their various roles and responsibilities in the complex delivery of services system. It is also necessary to develop and maintain good organizational skills for handling "last minute priorities". In addition to the above skills, one must know in detail how Department's information database (Assist) functions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Four years performing secretarial work or clerical work involving typing duties.

Notes:

1. Additional secretarial or clerical experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Thirty credit hours with a major in secretarial science or office technology from an accredited college may be substituted at the rate of thirty credits for one year of experience for up to two years of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Administration classifications or Administrative, Clerical, or Office Services specialty codes in the Administrative Support field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding these qualifications.

  • At least two years’ experience working for a senior level administrator or executive. 
  • General experience with ASSIST. 
  • At least one year experience working with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills. 
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task effectively. 
  • Flexibility in a busy environment. 
  • Strong time management, priority setting and problem-solving skills.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Demonstrated ability to accurately type on a keyboard on a personal computer at a minimum of forty words per minute may be required, depending on the specific requirements of the position.
