Introduction

The Maryland State Retirement Agency (“Agency”) is the administrator of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System (“System”). The System is a defined benefit retirement system covering governmental employees within the State of Maryland. The System is composed of twelve (12) separate retirement and pension systems with over 50 different rule sets.  The System is a qualified defined benefit retirement plan providing retirement, disability, and death benefits to over 400,000 members, retirees, and beneficiaries. The System’s members include State employees, teachers of all County schools within Maryland, correctional officers, State Police officers, judges, legislators, and employees of local governments that have elected to join the System.

The agency's Administration Division, Benefits Processing Unit has an opening for an Administrative Specialist III position.

POSITION DUTIES

This Administrative Specialist III position works as part of the Benefits Processing Unit in the Benefit Administration Division. The position is primarily responsible for processing member requests for estimates of their monthly retirement benefits and member requests to retire and begin receiving their monthly payments.
In completion of these duties this position will:
* Review estimate applications and retirement applications submitted by members to ensure that they are properly completed;
* Review member accounts to determine if they are eligible to retire at their selected estimated retirement date or actual retirement date;
* Determine if the balances of service credit (retirement credit) and member contributions are correct on the member’s account;
* Calculate the member’s average final salary;
* Calculate additional service credit to be projected or awarded at retirement; and
* Enter and batch information from applications and worksheets to create estimates and new retirement accounts.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Four years of experience in administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university for the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer involving staff work requiring regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting rules and regulations in accordance with agency laws and policies on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

* At least one year of experience in using Microsoft Office suite of products (Word, Excel, Outlook).

* At least one year of experience reviewing documents for accuracy.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
