Main Purpose of Job
To direct and administer all aspects of wildlife and land management on certain public and
private lands within an assigned geographic area, which includes supervising employees. The
incumbent is also responsible for managing public use on all assigned Wildlife Management
Areas (WMA) and Cooperative Wildlife Management Areas as well as providing input on
wildlife management issues for other DNR properties. This includes the safe and appropriate
operation and maintenance of the assigned WMA’s located within the assigned area and
associated infrastructure as well as the proper maintenance of an extensive equipment
inventory and vehicle fleet.
The employee is responsible for the efficient and appropriate operation of the Managed
Hunting Program centered at Gwynnbrook WMA that oversees hunter access to numerous
public tracts in the region. The employee also is responsible for wildlife response work in the
assigned geographic area.
POSITION DUTIES
The Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage Service is seeking interested candidates for a Wildlife Biologist III position to administer and operate the Managed Hunting Program out of the Gwynnbrook WMA Office, assist with the coordination of public hunting /trapping programs, and act as the agency representative through regular public interactions in a variety of situations. Responsibilities will also include assisting with wildlife surveys, data collection, timely completion of administrative paperwork, and a variety of land, habitat, and facilities management activities on a network of wildlife management and managed hunting areas in assigned region. Additional responsibilities include repair and maintenance of buildings and equipment, providing technical assistance to the public and resolve nuisance / injured / sick wildlife issues when warranted bylaws, regulations, or policies. Work activities may involve use of firearms, immobilization equipment, animal restraint devices, pesticide application equipment, participation in prescribed burning projects, heavy lifting, use of 4-wheel drive vehicles, atv / utv’s, agricultural/heavy equipment, and boats. The incumbent will be subject to periodic adverse working conditions (hot / cold temperatures, rain / snow / ice, insects, mud, smoke, direct contact with wildlife, etc…).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
Four years of professional experience conducting research and analysis in the fields of biology, biochemistry, environmental science, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management or zoology and four years of experience in performing professional biological work in the field of natural resources management.
NOTES:
1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology or physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study from an accredited college or university and four years of experience in performing professional biological work in the field of natural resources management for the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute graduate education beyond a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a natural resources related field of study as described above at the rate of 15 graduate credit hours for one year of experience for up to two years of the required experience.
3.Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the wildlife biology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience operating farming or heavy equipment such as tractors, loaders, dozers, etc. in the performance of wildlife habitat management, with Commercial Class A or B driver’s license is preferred.
- Experience with animal capture techniques and the collection of biological data used to manage /monitor native wildlife populations is preferred.
- Experience in the operation of a Managed Hunt Program.
- Experience with ArcGIS or similar mapping software.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
