Main Purpose of Job

This position is the sole Maryland State employee to support the Laurel Readiness Center and Field Maintenance Shop #8. The main function of an employee in this classification is to perform independently, moderately complex tasks in maintenance work, including routine construction work, rendering routine preventative maintenance and making minor repairs or improvements to building, fixtures, mechanical equipment, grounds and roadways. Grounds maintenance includes seasonal grass cutting, tree trimming, edging, and snow removal. Requests resupply of consumable items. Writes work order requests for repairs beyond skill level and maintains log of equipment and supplies used.

POSITION DUTIES

Makes minor repairs (i.e. caulking, painting, plumbing-replace sinks, faucets, p-traps, electrical-replace light switches, light bulbs, light fixtures, carpentry- repair drywall, door framing, heating and cooling systems-replace filters, gauges) utilizing a variety of hand tools to provide a fully operational finished product.

Assists with construction projects.

Provides assistance to Facilities Sustainment Team's technicians.

Maintains floors in assigned building by dust mopping, wet mopping, periodic stripping and waxing.

Maintains carpeted areas by vacuuming and applying stain remover when necessary.

Removes all trash and debris from public and private areas.

Cleans lavatories.

Removes snow and ice from surrounding walkways, driveways and access points around facilities.

Assists with general landscaping of grounds.

Maintains adequate cleaning and maintenance supplies.

Inventory supplies, requesting replenishment.

All other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of the eighth grade.

Experience: Three years of experience in any combination of the maintenance trades provided that at least two years of such experience shall have been primarily with the trades of electricity, plumbing, steamfittings, refrigeration or air-conditioning.

Notes:

1. Applicants may substitute additional experience in any of the maintenance trades on a year-for-year basis for up to three years of the required education.

2. A degree from an accredited vocational or technical high school with a major in Building Maintenance or a related field may be substituted for the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in utilities repair classifications or construction and engineering specialty codes in any combination of maintenance trades, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
