Main Purpose of Job
This is a clinical level position with the Division of Rehabilitation Services, Rehabilitation Technology Services Program that specializes in the application of computer based and other assistive technologies that when applied, promote employment, economic self-sufficiency and/or independence of individuals who are blind, visually impaired, and/or deaf/blind.
POSITION DUTIES
This is a clinical level position responsible for performing assistive technology services in the Rehabilitation Technology Services Department. Perform detailed and comprehensive clinical assessments of individuals who are blind, visually impaired, and/or deaf/blind to determine potential need for and benefit from computer based and other assistive technology. Provide assessments of home, training and work sites to determine most appropriate application of assistive technology and related accommodation strategies. Performs the following Assistive Technology Support Services and Training for individuals who are blind, visually impaired, and/or deaf/blind, as appropriate: Setup and configure computer systems and related assistive technology. Conduct group and/or individual orientation and assistive technology hardware/software training. This position provides technical assistance to DORS rehabilitation counselors for the Office of Blind and Vision Services. Performs case management duties and completes required documentation including written reports. Serve as a resource to and provide technical expertise to staff regarding assistive technology for individuals who are blind, visually impaired, and/or deaf/blind.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree is required. A Master’s Degree is preferred.
EXPERIENCE: Two years of professional experience in assistive technology, teaching or rehabilitation work in education or rehabilitation programs for individuals who are blind, visually impaired, and/or deaf/blind.
NOTES: Certifications such as RESNA’s Assistive Technology Professional (ATP), ACVREP’s Certified Assistive Technology Instructional Specialist for People with Visual Impairments (CATIS), Vendor Certifications (JAWS, ZoomText etc…), or certificate/degree’s in AT or Special Education such as CSUN’s Assistive Technology Applications Certificate Program (ATACP) is preferred.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of Assistive Technologies, including but not limited to video and optical magnifiers, Screen Magnification and Screen Reading programs, Standalone Readers, Voice Recorders (commercial and adaptive). Knowledge of Commercial Technologies, software, and their accessibility settings, including but not limited to Apple iOS, Android OS, Windows OS, Microsoft Office and Internet browsers. Knowledge of existing and emerging technologies. Knowledge of Windows and Apple Keystrokes and non-visual access methods.
Ability to install, configure, troubleshoot, and train on assistive technology.
Ability to read Braille.
Ability to interpret medical eye reports; analyze for medical implications for visual functioning; assess for functional limitations; and develop and implement individualized objective-based learning and intervention programs through task analysis and strategies which include the use of visual techniques, non-visual techniques (auditory and tactual), strategies and problem-solving skills.
Ability to develop and implement training materials. Ability to provide excellent customer service and communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
