Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of the position is to screen every gun case for federal, state, county and local law enforcement agencies to ensure that the investigation is complete, the defendant is properly charged, the prosecutor is prepared to aggressively prosecute the matter and the defendant is held accountable for his/her actions.


Position duties include but are not limited to the following:

Answer calls, e-mails and other correspondence concerning gun offenders / offenses

Query, interpret and apply a wide variety of law enforcement databases to include: MD / FBI / CJIS / NLETS criminal records and other NCIC databases such as stolen / wanted files, etc.;

Different judicial information systems such as MD JIS Maryland Court system;

Maryland Automated Firearms Services System;

Different driver's license databases such as Maryland MVA;

MD DPSCS's databases to include Parole & Probation, Sex Offender Registry, etc.;

Law Enforcement Information Exchange (LINX);

Law Enforcement National Data Exchange (N-DEX)

Regional Automated Property Information database (RAPID);

ATF National Tracing Center Electronic Tracing Systems (e-Trace)



Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Four years of experience in administrative staff or professional work.


1. Additional experience in administrative staff or professional work may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.


Experience:  Two of the four years of the required experience must include supervisory law enforcement (certified police officer) experience.  This experience should include the completion and review of background investigations using various law enforcement databases such as but not limited to: the Maryland Automated Firearms Services Section, the National Crime Information Center, and the Maryland Electronic Telecommunications Enforcement Resource System (METERS).


Extensive knowledge of Maryland Gun Laws


Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.


Candidates will be subject to a complete criminal background investigation to include a polygraph examination before appointment can be made.  A criminal conviction may be grounds for rejection of the candidate. 


Only candidates who meet the minimum and selective qualifications will be considered for this position and will be placed on an eligible list as a BEST, BETTER or QUALIFIED candidate.  The list will be used by the hiring manager to select the individual to fill this vacancy.


Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
