Migratory Finfish Complex Survey Internship

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Fishing and Boating Services is offering a part-time internship for energetic candidates interested in learning about fisheries biology. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to participate in field work, data entry, biological sample processing and learn fish aging techniques. Our project focuses on American shad, blueback herring, and alewife herring. We visit a variety of field sites including the Conowingo dam and the Northeast, Choptank, and Nanticoke rivers. This internship will provide the opportunity to develop both field and laboratory skills and will serve as a great introduction to the field of fisheries science. The internship period is March to June 2019, minimum of 24 hours per week.

Main Purpose of Job

The primary responsibility of this internship will be to assist with field and office work. Our field work includes fishery independent and dependent sampling. The selected applicant will assist with various sampling gear including, fyke nets, pound nets, gill nets and hook and line. Field work is conducted from March through summer, and will include early mornings and long hours. The successful applicant must be comfortable working on boats, often in adverse weather conditions. Office work will include data entry and management and scale mounting for fish ageing. Opportunities for training based on the intern’s interests and abilities are also a possibility. A work study or research project can be included with the internship for credit upon approval of your school. 


Education: Bachelor’s degree or currently enrolled in a college or university.

Completion of coursework in the fields of biology, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries are desired.
