NATURE OF WORK

A Superintendent of Education DJJ is managerial work directing the educational programs in the Department of Juvenile Justice. An employee in this classification supervises instructional, program and support staff. Employees in this classification receive general supervision from the Assistant Secretary for Residential Services or other designated Administrator.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Plans, organizes, implements, directs and evaluates all educational programs within the Department of Juvenile Justice; Recruits, supervises, trains and evaluates instructional and support personnel; Develops school curricula to meet the needs of DJJ students; Collaborates with private and public agencies that offer allied and supportive assistance to the DJJ educational program; Establish and jointly develop with local education agencies written policies and procedures for the acquisition of pupil records, placement of pupils returning to public schools and the issuance of school credits; Advises higher-level administrators on matters related to the operation of educational programs; Develops and administers educational grants; Prepares annual budgets; Performs other related duties.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Education: Master’s degree in Special Education, Educational Administration or a related field. Possession of appropriate education credentials as determined by the Maryland State Board of Education.

Experience: Experience providing classroom instruction to students and in supervising lower-level teachers.
