NATURE OF WORK

A Teacher Supervisor MSDE is the supervisory level of work teaching one or more subjects to youth or adult students in an educational program operated by the Maryland State Department of Education or the Department of Juvenile Services in a correctional or juvenile services facility.  Employees in this classification directly supervise lower-level Teachers MSDE and may be responsible for the administration of the educational program at the facility.

Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a Principal or other educational administrator at the facility. The work of this class is performed in a correctional or juvenile services facility where the students may be disruptive or abusive and may require remedial training.

The Teacher Supervisor MSDE is differentiated from the Teacher Lead MSDE in that Teacher Supervisor MSDE has supervisory responsibility for lower-level Teachers MSDE while Teacher Lead MSDE trains, guides and directs the work of lower-level Teachers MSDE.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Supervises lower-level Teachers MSDE and may be responsible for the educational program at the facility;

Provides classroom instruction in one or more subjects to students in an educational program at a correctional or juvenile services facility;

Plans and coordinates the student curricula and prepares daily and weekly lesson plans and other instructional material;

Assigns lessons and administers tests to students;

Cooperates with correctional and case management staff and counselors and provides student attendance and progress reports to students and staff;

Facilitates and maintains a classroom environment conducive to learning;

Assesses emergency and crisis situations, makes appropriate contacts and referrals and provides interim emergency medical and other assistance as necessary until specialized assistance is available;

May provide General Educational Development instruction, training in basic life skills or vocational instruction;

Performs other related duties.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Education:    Possession of appropriate educational credentials as determined by the Maryland State Board of Education.

Experience: Three years of experience providing classroom instruction to students.

This classification is not assigned to a bargaining unit, as indicated by the designation of S (Supervisor), M (Manager), T (Agency Head), U (Board or Commission Member), W (Student), X (Used by Agency or Excluded by Executive Order), or Z (Confidential).  As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded from collective bargaining.  Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.
