NATURE OF WORK

A Physician Program Manager I is Physician work at the managerial level.  Employees in this classification primarily function as Health Officers for small local county health departments located in the Maryland Department of Health.  Employees in this classification supervise or oversee the supervision of all assigned professional, technical and support staff employees through Physician Supervisors and other subordinate supervisors.

Employees in this classification receive managerial supervision from a higher-level administrator or an Executive.

Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology.  The use of this method involves comparing assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work Sections of the class specification.

The Physician Program Manager I is Health Officer for small local county health departments.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Establishes and implements medical guidelines, policies, procedures, standards and controls;

Evaluates implementation of programs and coordinates with public and private agencies providing similar services;

Plans, organizes and supervises the work of assigned subordinate personnel;

Formulates policy and coordinates the activities for various services within the program;

Collaborates and consults with Physicians in preparation of activity plans and short and long range planning;

Addresses professional and lay groups;

May preside at ward, diagnostic and clinical conferences on appropriate treatment required for specific cases;

May review clinical records of patients to assure their adequacy and proper administration;

May provide consultation and review of the clinical appropriateness of prescribed medications and laboratory tests;

May provide hands-on patient and clinical services;

May provide consultative services in an area of medical specialization;

Performs other related duties.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Applicants for this classification must be licensed and currently registered with the Maryland Board of Physicians to practice medicine under Maryland State Law. A photocopy of the current registration must be attached to the application.

2. Applicants for this classification not yet possessing a license to practice medicine in Maryland but eligible for licensure must attach a photocopy of a letter from the Maryland Board of Physicians stating eligibility by reciprocity or endorsement. Applicants will not be appointed until they have received a license from the Maryland Board of Physicians. The Board may be contacted at 4201 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21215.
