NATURE OF WORK

A Therapeutic Recreator I is the intermediate level of work assessing, planning, implementing and performing therapeutic recreation in the treatment of mentally ill, aged, physically ill, or physically disabled patients or developmentally disabled clients in State treatment facilities or community-based programs. Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions.

Employees in this classification receive moderate supervision from a Therapeutic Recreator Supervisor, Director of Activity Therapy or other healthcare professional. Employees are required to observe infection control precautions in order to prevent contamination and spread of disease. Employees may be required to physically restrain patients/clients displaying violent aggressive behavior. The work may require the lifting and positioning of nonambulatory patients/clients and the lifting of wheelchairs and other heavy equipment. The work may require long periods of standing, walking, bending and reaching. Employees may be assigned to day, evening, night, or rotating shifts which may include holidays and weekends. These employees are subject to call-in and overtime based on staffing needs.

Positions in this classification are evaluated using the classification job evaluation methodology. The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specification.

The Therapeutic Recreator I and the Therapeutic Recreator II are differentiated on the basis of degree of supervisory control exercised by the supervisor over these employees.
