NATURE OF WORK

A Therapy Services Manager is the managerial level of work overseeing two or more therapy services programs such as but not limited to: Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Activity Therapy, Art Therapy, Pre-Vocational Adjustment, Speech and Audiology and Communications disorder. Employees in this classification are responsible for program planning and evaluation; budget development and execution; and policy development for therapy services programs in a state facility or local health department.  Employees in this classification may administratively or technically supervise lower-level supervisors involved in therapy services programs, such as but not limited to: Physical Therapist Supervisor, Occupational Therapist Supervisor, Art Therapist Supervisor, Speech Pathologist/ Audiologist Supervisor, Activity Services Supervisor, or Work Adjustment Supervisors.  At least one of the subordinate supervisors must be in the same discipline as the Therapy Services Manager. Employees in this classification provide technical supervision to non-clinical staff.

Employees in this classification receive managerial supervision from a Medical Director, program administrator or other licensed healthcare administrator.  Employees may be assigned to day, evening, night or rotating shifts which may include holidays and weekends and may be subject to call-in and overtime based on staffing needs. Employees are required to observe infection control precautions in order to prevent contamination and spread of disease.  Employees may be required to physically restrain patient/clients displaying violent and aggressive behavior.  The work may require the lifting and positioning of non-ambulatory patients/clients and the lifting of wheelchairs and other heavy equipment.  The work may require long periods of standing, walking, bending, and reaching.

Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology.  The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and. EXAMPLES OF WORK

Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates two or more therapy services programs for an entire State facility or community-based program, including but not limited to: a Physical Therapy program, an Occupational Therapy program, Art Therapy program, activity therapy programs, or speech and audiology communication disorders in accordance with established standards for licensure, accreditation, certification and related laws, policies, and regulations;

Supervises subordinate supervisors;

Oversees daily operations through subordinate supervisors, professional therapists and support staff assigned to the therapy programs;

Evaluates the effectiveness of existing therapy services programs in order to assure quality by implementing changes in delivery of service or alternative programs;

Develops staffing patterns and standards;

Conducts and participates in formal training programs for subordinate staff;

Prepares, presents and executes the program budget;

Prepares reports and maintains records;

May provide direct therapeutic services to patients/clients;

Performs other related duties.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Specific educational and experience requirements are set by the agency based on the essential job functions assigned to the position.

2. In accordance with the Health Occupations Article of the Annotated Code of Maryland, employees in this classification must possess a current license: as a Physical Therapist from the Maryland State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners in accordance with Title 13-301 or as an Occupational Therapist from the Maryland State Board of Occupational Therapy Practice in accordance with Title 10-301 or as a Speech Pathologist Audiologist from the Maryland State Board of Audiologists, Hearing Aid Dispensers & Speech-Language Pathologists in accordance Title 2 or as a Clinical Professional Art Therapist from the Maryland State Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists in accordance with Title 17-101.
