NATURE OF WORK

A Services Supervisor I is a supervisory level of work directing one or more general services functions for State departments, agencies or facilities.  Employees in this classification may supervise lower-level Services Specialists, clerical, skilled or semi-skilled employees.

Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a designated administrator.  Employees in this classification may be assigned day, evening or night shifts which may include weekends and holidays.

Positions in the Services Supervisor series are differentiated on the basis of relative job evaluations among similarly functioning positions.  The job factors include:  qualifications; nature and purpose of personal contacts; nature of recommendations, commitments, decisions and conclusions; creative thought; responsibility for planning; responsibility for administration; and nature of supervision received.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Plans, coordinates and directs one or more general services functions, such as, but not limited to: building, housekeeping, groundskeeping services; risk management; fleet management; forms management; mail/courier services; inventory, purchasing and supplies; clerical services; receptionist/switchboard; records management; reproduction services; security services; space allocation; and telecommunications;

Inspects assigned areas to ensure work is performed in accordance with instructions and that any adjustments that may be necessary are made;

Establishes and modifies operational methods and procedures within assigned areas of responsibility;

Maintains records and prepares reports pertaining to supplies, necessary repairs and equipment;

Estimates needs and requisitions supplies and equipment;

Oversees the work of subordinate staff performing various general services activities;

Performs other related duties.

Specific educational and experience requirements are set by the agency based on the essential job functions assigned to the position.

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System.  All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions.  Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.

This classification is not assigned to a bargaining unit, as indicated by the designation of S (Supervisor), M (Manager), T (Agency Head), U (Board or Commission Member), W (Student), X (Used by Agency or Excluded by Executive Order), or Z (Confidential).  As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded collective bargaining.  Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.
