NATURE OF WORK

An Educational Support Program Coordinator I is the supervisory level of work of child nutrition, transportation services or library programs for the Maryland State Department of Education. Employees in this classification serve as an Assistant Section Chief within a Branch/Office of a Division/Office of the Department. Employees in this classification supervise Staff Specialists, Education and other employees.

An Educational Support Program Coordinator I receives managerial supervision from an Educational Support Program Coordinator II Branch/Office Section Chief.

Positions in this classification are evaluated using the Classification job evaluation methodology. This method compares the position’s assigned duties and responsibilities to the job criteria in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specification.

The Educational Support Program Coordinator I is differentiated from the Educational Support Program Coordinator II in that the Educational Support Program Coordinator II is Section Chief for Statewide Educational Support Programs and has full supervisory responsibility for Educational Support Program Coordinators I and Staff Specialists, Education while the Educational Support Program Coordinator I is Assistant Section Chief for Statewide Educational Support Programs, has full supervisory responsibility for lower-level Staff Specialist, Education and budget responsibility for at least one program.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Supervises and coordinates educational support programs having statewide application in a section within a Branch/Office of the Maryland Department of Education;

Establishes overall policies and procedures for the program(s), oversees implementation and approves revisions;

Establishes program goals, standards and controls to meet program objectives;

Oversees and manages the personnel and financial resources of the program(s);

Develops short and long-range plans for program operations and resources based on knowledge of community assets;

Determines organizational structure and staffing needs of program(s);

Oversees development and training of program staff;

Plans, coordinates, supervises and evaluates the work of Staff Specialists, Education and other assigned staff;

Represents the department in a liaison capacity with managers and officials of other agencies and the federal government concerning program activities;

Makes recommendations concerning child nutrition, transportation services or library program areas and operational issues to a Section Chief and Branch/Office Chief;

Performs other related duties.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Education: Possession of a master’s degree or at least 36 hours of equivalent post-baccalaureate course work.

Experience: Three years administering education or library programs.

Notes:

1. Two additional years of experience may be substituted for the master’s degree or 36 hours of equivalent post-baccalaureate course work.

2. The above requirements are set by the Maryland State Department of Education in accordance with Education Article, Section 2-104.
