NATURE OF WORK

An employee in this class plans, administers, coordinates, and reviews the security, treatment, and administrative programs of state prisons. Work involves directing professional, technical, security, clerical, and other staff and subordinate managerial staff.

This position is responsible for professional adult correctional institution management and supervisory work of unusual difficulty in directing all security, treatment, and administration for state prisons.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

In accord with departmental policies, dictates, rules, regulations, and applicable law, formulates procedures for the proper operation of the largest of correctional institutions; plans, supervises, coordinates, and reviews programs which will meet the needs for the security, discipline, education, religious, health, dietary, work, and general welfare of all inmates.

Through subordinate supervisory and managerial staff, directs the assignment, training, supervision, and evaluation of a large staff; reviews and makes decisions on employment, promotion, demotion, and other human resources actions as appropriate.

Supervises and participates in the development and maintenance of a significant operating budget for all site operations which involves significant responsibility for financial and physical assets.

Supervises and participates in the study of relevant policy and procedure and makes recommendation for change where appropriate; supervises the enforcement of policy and procedure for the institution.

Supervises and participates in the study of organization, operations, and services and makes recommendation for improvements affecting economy, efficiency, and quality of organization, operations, and services.

Performs difficult personal contact and liaison work, sometimes involving difficult negotiations; on a daily basis, interacts with management and line supervisory staff, inmates with special needs, central office superiors, and support staff; handles important public contact and liaison with other agencies.

Directs the preparation and maintenance of a very large volume of standard records and reports necessary for proper accomplishment of the mission of the institution; personally prepares reports calling for special expertise.

Performs related work as required.
