A Cashier Supervisor is the supervisory level of work receiving and disbursing checks, currency or other forms of cash payment. Employees in this classification supervise lower-level Cashiers.

Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a Fiscal Accounts Clerk Supervisor or other designated administrator.

Positions in this classification are evaluated using the classification job evaluation methodology.  The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of a class specification. 

The Cashier Supervisor is differentiated from the Cashier, Lead in that the Cashier Supervisor has supervisory responsibility for lower-level Cashiers while the Cashier, Lead assigns, reviews and approves the work of and trains Cashiers.


Plans, coordinates, supervises and evaluates the work of Cashiers and related support staff;

Maintains and updates cashiering procedures;

Schedules and instructs staff on cashiering policies and procedures;

Examines and reviews checks, currency or other forms of cash payment received and disbursed by Cashiers in order to identify counterfeits or forgeries;

Reviews and counts checks, currency and other forms of cash payments received and disbursed to verify balances;

Oversees the preparation of certificates of deposit and the transfer or deposit of currency;

Oversees the posting of data to the proper accounts;

Prepares reports for management on the receipt and disbursement of checks, currency and other forms of cash payment;

Schedules periodic maintenance of the cash registers and attempts to resolve any routine mechanical problems;

Oversees an inventory of cashiering supplies and equipment;

Performs other related duties.


Knowledge of basic arithmetic such as addition and subtraction;

Skill in training subordinates in the principles and practices of cashiering work;

Skill in operating a cash register and adding machine;

Skill in making accurate arithmetical calculations using addition and subtraction;

Skill in identifying legal currency;

Ability to prepare and present statistical and narrative reports of cashiering activities;

Ability to communicate effectively;

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, customers, students and the general public;

Ability to plan, coordinate, supervise and evaluate the work of Cashiers.


Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Two years of experience receiving and disbursing checks, currency or other forms of cash payment.

Note: Additional experience receiving and disbursing checks, currency or other forms of cash payment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.




Class specifications are broad descriptions covering groups of positions used by various State departments and agencies. Position descriptions maintained by the using department or agency specifically address the essential job functions of each position.

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System.  All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions.  Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.  

This classification is not assigned to a bargaining unit, as indicated by the designation of S (Supervisor), M (Manager), T (Agency Head), U (Board or Commission Member), W (Student), X (Used by Agency or Excluded by Executive Order), or Z (Confidential).  As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded collective bargaining.  Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.
