NATURE OF WORK

A Radiologic Technologist Supervisor is the supervisory level of work in the operation of x-ray equipment and the processing of x-ray films.  Employees in this classification supervise lower-level Radiologic Technologists.

Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a Physician or other health care professional.  Employees are required to observe infection control precautions in order to prevent contamination and spread of disease.  The work may require the lifting of patients.  Work is performed in local health clinics or residential facilities.

Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology.  The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specification.

The Radiologic Technologist Supervisor class is differentiated from the Radiologic Technologist II in that the Radiologic Technologist Supervisor has supervisory responsibility for lower-level Radiologic Technologists while the Radiologic Technologist II performs the full range of duties and responsibilities under general supervision.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Supervises, trains and evaluates lower-level Radiologic Technologists assigned to the unit;

Orders supplies and equipment;

Assures proper care and maintenance of x-ray equipment;

Takes x-rays of all parts of the body;

Reviews x-ray film to determine if required information was obtained;

Processes the films by developing, rinsing, fixing, washing, and drying;

Prepares, positions and monitors patients during x-ray therapy;

Records and files x-ray films, reports, and therapy records;

Makes appointments for patients, takes case histories, and maintains patient files;

Ensures that quality assurance and quality control standards are met;

May operate electrocardiograph and electroencephalograph equipment and process graphs;

May order supplies and equipment;

Performs other related duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of x-ray techniques and procedures;

Skill in the operation and care of x-ray equipment;

Skill in positioning of patients in order to obtain required x-ray information;

Ability to supervise and train Radiologic Technologists;

Ability to work with patients who may be fearful and uncooperative;

Ability to communicate effectively;

Ability to maintain records.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Determined by the Maryland State Board of Physician Quality Assurance under the certification requirements for Radiologic Technologist.

Experience: Two years of experience as a certified Radiologic Technologist.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in X-ray Technician classifications or Radiologic or Digital Imagery specialty codes in the Radiology Technology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current certificate as a Radiologic Technologist by the Maryland State Board of Physician Quality Assurance, 4102 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Some positions in this classification are assigned duties which will require the applicants to be examined by a physician. After an offer of employment, applicants for such positions will be given a medical examination to certify the ability to perform essential job functions.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and therefore, will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System.  All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions.  Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.

This classification is not assigned to a bargaining unit, as indicated by the designation of S (Supervisor), M (Manager), T (Agency Head), U (Board or Commission Member), W (Student), X (Used by Agency or Excluded by Executive Order), or Z (Confidential).  As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded collective bargaining.  Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.

Employees in this classification are eligible to receive overtime compensation.  An employee who works more than the normal workweek is entitled to be compensated for that overtime as provided by the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 8-305.
