NATURE OF WORK

A Radiologic Technologist I is the intermediate level of work in the operation of x‑ray equipment and the processing of x‑ray films.  Employees in this classification do not have supervise other positions.

Employees in this classification receive moderate supervision from a Radiologic Technologist Supervisor, Physician or other health care professional.  Employees are required to observe infection control precautions in order to prevent contamination and spread of disease.  The work may require the lifting of patients.  Work is performed in local health clinics or residential facilities.

Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology.  The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specification.

The Radiologic Technologist I and Radiologic Technologist II levels are differentiated on the basis of degree of supervisory control exercised by the supervisor over these employees.  The Radiologic Technologist I performs duties under close supervision at times and under general supervision at other times depending on the complexity of the specific duty being performed.  The Radiologic Technologist II performs the full range of duties and responsibilities under general supervision.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Takes x-rays of all parts of the body;

Reviews x-ray film to determine if required information was obtained;

Processes the films by developing, rinsing, fixing, washing, and drying;

Prepares, positions and monitors patients during x-ray therapy;

Records and files x-ray films, reports, and therapy records;

Makes appointments for patients, takes case histories, and maintains patient files;

Enters data into the computer;

Ensures that quality assurance and quality control standards are met;

May operate electrocardiograph and electroencephalograph equipment and process graphs;

May order supplies and equipment;

Performs other related duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of x-ray techniques and procedures;

Skill in the operation and care of x-ray equipment;

Skill in positioning of patients in order to obtain required x-ray information;

Ability to work with patients who may be fearful and uncooperative;

Ability to communicate effectively;

Ability to maintain records.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Determined by the Maryland State Board of Physician Quality Assurance under the certification requirements for Radiologic Technologists.

Experience: None.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current certificate as a Radiologic Technologist from the Maryland State Board of Physician Quality Assurance, 4201 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Some positions in this classification are assigned duties which will require the applicants to be examined by a Physician. After an offer of employment, applicants for such positions will be given a medical examination to certify the ability to perform essential job functions.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

Class specifications are broad descriptions covering groups of positions used by various State departments and agencies. Position descriptions maintained by the using department or agency specifically address the essential job functions of each position.

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System.  All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions.  Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.

This classification is assigned to Bargaining Unit D- Health and Human Service Nonprofessionals classes.  As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded from collective bargaining.  Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.

Employees in this classification are eligible to receive overtime compensation.  An employee who works more than the normal workweek is entitled to be compensated for that overtime as provided by the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 8-305.

This classification is one level in a Non-Competitive Promotion (NCP) series. NCP promotions are promotions by which employees may advance in grade and class level from trainee to full performance level in a classifications series.  In order to be non-competitively promoted to the next level in a NCP series, an employee must: 1) perform the main purpose of the class, as defined by the Nature of Work section of the class specification; 2) receive the type of supervision defined in the class specification and 3) meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.
