NATURE OF WORK

A Respiratory Care Practitioner I is the intermediate level of work providing respiratory therapy care and life support to patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary system.  Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions.

Employees in this classification receive moderate supervision from a Respiratory Care Practitioner Supervisor.  Employees may be assigned to day, evening, night or rotating shifts which may include holidays and weekends.  Employees may be subject to call-in and overtime based on staffing needs.  The work is usually performed in a State inpatient chronic care facility providing twenty-four hour care.  Employees are required to observe infection control precautions in order to prevent contamination and the spread of disease.  The work requires the lifting and moving of patients and equipment.

Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology.  The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specification.

The Respiratory Care Practitioner I and the Respiratory Care Practitioner II are differentiated on the basis of the degree of supervisory control exercised by the supervisor over these employees.  The Respiratory Care Practitioner I performs duties under close supervision at times and under general supervision at other times depending on the complexity of the specific duty being performed.  The Respiratory Care Practitioner II performs the full range of duties and responsibilities under general supervision.
