NATURE OF WORK

A Statistical Assistant I is the intermediate level of semi-professional statistical work.  Employees in this classification have primary responsibility for recurrent, routine data collection duties, tabulations or reports that already have developed procedures.  Employees in this classification participate in selecting, orienting, training and supervising clerical personnel assigned to their projects.  Employees in this classification, under professional direction, assist with special studies, pilot projects and preparation of reports involving more complex statistical procedures and in the development of directions and procedures for the conduct of statistical and other data-related routines and tasks.  Employees in this classification may supervise clerical staff.

Employees in this classification receive moderate direction and supervision from a higher-level Statistical Assistant or a professional Research Statistician.  Work effectiveness is evaluated through conferences and reports.

Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology.  The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specification.

The Statistical Assistant I and Statistical Assistant II are differentiated on the basis of degree of supervisory control exercised by the supervisor over these employees. The Statistical Assistant I performs duties under close supervision at times and under general supervision at other times depending on the complexity of the specific duty being performed and the Statistical Assistant II performs the full range of duties and responsibilities under general supervision.
