NATURE OF WORK

A Pharmacy Technician is the full performance level of technical pharmacy work.  Employees assist licensed pharmacists in a State health care facility in the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.   Employees in this classification perform responsible tasks, as allowed by Maryland law and the Board of Pharmacy, related to pharmacy practice.  Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions.

Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a licensed Pharmacist in accordance with Maryland law and Board of Pharmacy Regulations.  Employees may be assigned to day or evening shifts which may include holidays and weekends.  Employees may be required to lift and move heavy and bulky objects.  Employees may be also required to drive a vehicle on hospital grounds to deliver pharmaceutical items.

Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology.  The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the classification specification.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Prepares medicines obtained from the facility pharmacy, from doctor’s order sheets or prescriptions, facility stock forms, and facility medication order forms as instructed to include proper labeling;

Enters orders into the facility computer system as directed by the pharmacist to help prepare, maintain, and update patient profiles;

Prepares reports from pharmacy records and the facility computer system as requested by the pharmacist; Fills patient medication cassettes;

Fills and labels orders;

Prepares orders for purchasing medication;

Receives and verifies pharmaceutical shipments;

Operates packaging and labeling machinery;

Maintains files and records and submits required pharmacy reports;

Keeps work areas and equipment in the pharmacy clean;

May compile and maintain simple statistics;

May deliver medications to the nursing units;

May collect and deliver drug orders and run errands;

May order medication; May assist in training and orientation of other support personnel;

May perform inspections of emergency medication boxes and supplies and of medication storage areas including nursing units to determine compliance with facility medication storage policies;

Performs other related duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of the principles of chemistry, biology and basic mathematics;

Knowledge of pharmaceutical preparations and basic pharmaceutical techniques;

Knowledge of sanitation and personal hygiene;

Knowledge of the responsibilities of employees in regard to drug therapy of patients.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for this position must be registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the Maryland Board of Pharmacy, 4201 Patterson Avenue Baltimore, Maryland 21215.

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System. All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions. Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.

This classification is assigned to Bargaining Unit D, Health and Human Service Nonprofessionals classes. As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial, and confidential employees are excluded from collective bargaining. Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.

Employees in this classification are eligible to receive overtime compensation. An employee who works more than the normal workweek is entitled to be compensated for that overtime as provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 8-305.
