Responsibilities
The Zoning Plans Examiner is responsible for reviewing development proposals, site plans, and permit applications to ensure compliance with the City’s zoning code and applicable land use regulations. This position leads the administrative review of zoning plans to support the implementation of the adopted zoning code and promote high-quality development throughout the community. The role works closely with property owners, developers, architects, and contractors to explain zoning requirements and assist applicants in achieving compliance during the permitting process. The Zoning Plans Examiner collaborates with internal departments to coordinate development review and ensure projects align with planning policies and best practices. The position also provides technical guidance related to zoning interpretation, maintains accurate review records, and helps resolve complex zoning issues. Through these responsibilities, the Zoning Plans Examiner supports efficient development review while protecting the integrity of the City’s zoning regulations and planning goals.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree from a college approved by the Planning Accreditation Board (PAB) AND 4 years of experience in land use planning, zoning administration, building regulations, architecture or civil engineering.
OR
Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Engineering or Architecture AND 6 years of experience in land use planning, zoning administration, building regulations, architecture or civil engineering.
Degree must be from a college or university that is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission or equivalent region.
A combination of planning education and experience related to land use and training or education in Architecture, Engineering or Construction Techniques is strongly preferred.
License Requirements
Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

Background Check
A background investigation and evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity is required prior to employment. All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position, including current city employees seeking transfer, promotion, demotion, etc. into a classified position.
Medical Examination & Drug and Nicotine Testing
Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination including drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees.
