Responsibilities

Ensures the safe, efficient, and timely dispatch of school buses by confirming driver and vehicle availability for all daily routes and special trips. Assigns substitute drivers to cover emergencies and absences as needed. Monitors two-way radio communications during route operations and provides support to drivers when necessary. Maintains daily operational records related to transportation activities. Coordinates vehicle repair needs between drivers and the bus garage. Assists parents with concerns regarding missed or delayed bus stops and directs routing issues to appropriate district personnel. Ensures special education students are released to authorized individuals when a parent or guardian is unavailable. Communicates important information and updates to bus drivers. Operates a school bus when necessary to maintain route coverage.

Minimum Qualifications

Education
Graduation from high school (or G.E.D.). 

Experience 
Must have 2-3 years of experience as a bus driver, router, or comparable experience. 

License Requirements

Must have an Ohio Commercial Driver’s License (C.D.L.) with School Bus and Passenger Endorsements.

Citizenship

Must be a U.S. citizen or have the legal right to work in the United States, at time of application.

Military Credit

Open Competitive applicants who have had military service will receive an additional credit of 20% if a passing grade is attained. TO OBTAIN CREDIT, A NON-RETURNABLE COPY OF THE DD214 OR CERTIFICATE OF SERVICE (INDICATING HONORABLE DISCHARGE) MUST BE SUBMITTED AT TIME OF EXAMINATION.

Promotional Qualifications

Current full-time permanent employment with Dayton Public Schools must be indicated on your application in order to receive promotional credit. Current employment will be verified by Dayton Public Schools’ Human Resources Department. Identical scores will be broken by (1) seniority and (2) random selection method.  

Open Competitive Applicants

Applicants appearing on the Promotional eligible list shall be considered for appointment prior to those on the Open Competitive list. Identical scores will be broken in favor of: (1) the candidate who received military credit and (2) random selection method.

Examination dates and times are subject to change. Calculators will be provided for the Civil Service examination. Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination, drug screen and/or police background investigation and providing documentary evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity. Applicants are responsible for providing all necessary employment dates, experience, training, or any other requirements as stated in the Exam Announcement, in order for their application to be considered for certification and admittance to the examination process.
