Responsibilities
This is a multi-incumbent position that can be assigned to any functional area as needed within the Recreation Department. The Recreation Facility Specialist I (RFS I) oversees the daily operations of the recreation programs at an assigned facility. The incumbent promotes activities by providing information to the public on recreation programs available through all City locations. RFS I's supervise, train and evaluate various staff members (i.e. subordinate employees, volunteers and some contractual positions such as fitness instructors) for both youth and adult recreation programs. The RFS I also coordinate with Public Works to ensure the upkeep and maintenance of the grounds, equipment and parking lots of their assigned facility. Additionally, the incumbent supervises and/or assists in instructing classes, workshops and activities at assigned facilities. RFS I's assists with budget development and is accountable for all record keeping and reporting of daily revenues, program revenues and incident/accident reports.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate's degree or higher in Recreation Administration, Physical Education, Sports Management, Leisure Services, Business
Administration, Communications or a related field
AND one year of full-time paid supervisory/leadership experience;
OR
High School diploma (or G.E.D.) AND 6 years of full-time or 7 years of part-time (part-time defined as having worked on average 35 hours/week) paid supervisory/leadership experience in recreation, athletic or leisure time activities.
Degree must be from a college or university that is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission or equivalent region.
License Requirements
Must possess a valid driver’s license, at time of appointment, and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.
Special Requirements
Within 6 months of appointment, the following certifications must be obtained and maintained as a condition of continued employment:
- First Aid and Adult/Child Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) with Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
- Certified Pool Operator (CPO)
- Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP)

Background Check
A background investigation and evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity is required prior to employment. All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position, including current city employees seeking transfer, promotion, demotion, etc. into a classified position.
Medical Examination & Drug and Nicotine Testing
Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination including drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees.
