Chief Plans Examiner

Responsibilities

The Chief Plans Examiner acts as the City's technical liaison with the design, construction and trades industry as well as professional groups, and other enforcement agencies. Reviews all plans and specifications for construction and occupancy of all buildings in the City. Incumbent supervises the processing of plans and applications for various permits and the approval of all plans and permits by agencies to ensure the enforcement of all applicable codes. Recommends code and enforcement changes to policy makers as construction technology and public safety standards change. Incumbent conducts and coordinates training programs for City Building Inspection personnel and local design professionals on the use and application of building codes and ordinances.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering or closely related field AND 5 years of experience in building design, construction, or plans examination for buildings or structures within the scope of groups regulated by the rules of the Ohio Board of Building Standards while registered in Ohio as an architect or professional engineer.

Certifications

Must possess a Master Plans Examiner Certificate of Competency or have the ability to obtain the certification within 2 years of appointment.

License Requirements

Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

Special Requirements

Must be registered in the State of Ohio as an Architect or Professional Engineer

Background Check 
A background investigation and evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity is required prior to employment. All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position, including current city employees seeking transfer, promotion, demotion, etc. into a classified position. 

Medical Examination & Drug and Nicotine Testing 
Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination including drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees.
