Introduction

Responsibilities

Ensures the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of the in-house information systems that support core organizational functions. Monitors, maintains, supports and optimizes all networked software and associated operating systems. The Systems Engineer is a multi-faceted infrastructure support position that can be assigned the following duties: server administrator, database administrator, information security administrator, disaster recovery administrator and network administrator or a combination. Incumbents must have knowledge of data communications, network planning and analysis, database concepts and structures, interactive web page design, desktop systems, vendor evaluations, interfacing and/or modifying communication or database software, and standard practices in Information & Technology Services.

Must be available for call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The various departments that utilize Systems Engineer are Information Technology, Aviation and Water. The current opening is in the Information Technology department. For vacancies in Information Technology, candidates with experience in the following area(s) are preferred:

  • Extreme Networks and Cisco Networks
  • Latest Microsoft Server, Desktop Server and Desktop Windows operating systems
  • Office 365
  • Latest SQL Server RDBMS technologies
  • Server and desktop virtualization technologies (VMWare)
  • Unified Communications
  • SAS / NAS storage technologies
  • Backup / recovery technologies

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Geographic Information Systems, Engineering or a related field AND 3 years of experience in one of the following: systems engineering, database administration, or systems analysis and design;

OR

Associate's degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Geographic Information Systems, Engineering or a related field AND 5 years of experience in one of the following: systems engineering, database administration or systems analysis and design.

Degree must be from a college or university that is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission or equivalent region. 

Certifications

Candidates with any of the following certifications are preferred:

1.   Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS)
2.   Microsoft Certified Professional Developer (MCPD)
3.   Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP)
4.   Microsoft Certified Master (MCM)
5.   Microsoft Certified Architect (MCA)
6.   VMware Certified Professional 
7.   VMware Certified Advanced Professional
8.   Oracle Certified Associate
9.   Oracle Certified Professional
10. Oracle Certified Master
11. Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)

License Requirements

Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

Background Check 
A background investigation and evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity is required prior to employment. All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position, including current city employees seeking transfer, promotion, demotion, etc. into a classified position.

Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination including drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment.
