Introduction

Nature of Work

This position requires skilled work at the journey-worker level in acetylene and/or electric arc welding. Work of this class involves responsibility for the application of journeyman trade skills to a wide variety of welding, brazing and metal cutting jobs on ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Cuts, welds and fabricates various attachments or modifications for numerous types of automotive and related equipment. Welds joints and fittings on new water lines. Occasionally does blacksmithing such as manufacturing eye bolts, braces, angle brackets and similar items.

Minimum Education

Graduation from high school or (G.E.D.) AND completion of training program that leads to journey-worker level welding certification.
 

Minimum Experience

Five years of experience at the skilled journey-worker level in MIG, TIC, Stick or Acetylene welding and cutting. Experience must have been obtained within the past 3 years. Must have experience in fabrication.

Certifications

Must have completed an approved training program in Arc and Acetylene welding from the American Welding Society (AWS) or equivalent certifying authority, and submit at time of application.

License Requirements

Must possess a valid driver's license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

Within 120 days of appointment must obtain and maintain a valid Ohio Class A Commercial Driver's License (C.D.L.), including the qualification to operate a vehicle with air brakes and any other endorsements required by the State of Ohio. Out of state residents must have equivalent licenses from their state of residence within the prescribed 120 days of appointment.

General Requirements

Provable record of welding qualifications AND completion of approved training MUST be submitted at time of application.

Applicants achieving a passing score on the multiple choice computerized examination will undergo a skilled welding assessment that will take place October 4, 2021 at Hobart Institute of Welding Technology.

Applicants ARE REQUIRED to bring all MANDATORY personal welding safety related (PPE) equipment such as: Gloves, Welding Hood, Welding Jacket, Safety Glasses, Work Boots AND needed hand tools (grinders, wire brushes, pliers, etc.). 

*The Hobart Institute has a supply store at which students can purchase mandatory PPE and supplies if needed.

**All applicants will be required to fill out a HIWT liability release form before assessment can start.

Notes

Examination dates and times are subject to change. Calculators will be provided for the Civil Service examination. Identical scores will be broken by a random selection method. Applicants are responsible for providing all necessary employment dates, experience, training, or any other requirements as stated in the Exam Announcement, in order for their application to be considered for certification and admittance to the examination process.

Police background investigation will be required. Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a drug screen. 

Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. 

The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees subsequent to HR Policy 2.09.
