Introduction

Nature of Work

Protects public health, safety, private property and investments by inspecting installations, repairs, alterations, construction or demolition to new and existing buildings to ensure compliance with construction codes.  These inspections range from single family residences to high rise office buildings, schools, hospitals and manufacturing plants.  Must use communication skills with contractors, violators and complainants to achieve code compliance and if necessary, serves as an expert witness for prosecution of code violators.

Minimum Education

Graduation from high school (or G.E.D.).

Minimum Experience

Applicant must meet one of the following requirements:

1.  Possess a current State of Ohio full Building Inspector Certification; OR

2.  Three years of experience as a construction contractor or supervisor for non-residential buildings or structures within the scope of groups regulated by the rules of the Board of Building Standards; OR

3.  Three years of experience as a skilled tradesworker for work subject to inspection under a non-residential building code; OR

4.  Successful completion of a trainee program pursuant to Ohio Building Code Section 103.2.12 at time of application.


License Requirements

Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.


General Requirements

Applicants who do not have a current full State of Ohio Building Inspector Certification at time of appointment must obtain said Certification, pursuant to Ohio Building Code Section 103.3.6, prior to the end of their 2 year interim certification.

Special Requirements

Must hold either an interim or full State of Ohio Inspector Certification for Building Inspector at time of application.

Open Competitive Applicants

Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination and providing documentary evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity. Identical scores will be broken by a random selection method.

Examination dates and times are subject to change. Calculators will be provided for the Civil Service examination. Applicants are responsible for providing all necessary employment dates, experience, training, or any other requirements as stated in the Exam Announcement, in order for their application to be considered for certification and admittance to the examination process.

Police background investigation will be required. Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a drug screen. 

Effective July 15, 2019, the City of Dayton adopted the Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy (HR 1.03). Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. 

The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees subsequent to HR Policy 2.09.
