Introduction

Nature of Work

To provide basic fire prevention and suppression services to all City of Dayton Aviation facilities and to provide emergency medical and rescue services as needed.

Minimum Education

Graduation from high school (or G.E.D.).

Age

Must be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment.

License Requirements

Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.


Special Requirements

The following certifications and training must be obtained and maintained thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment:

  • At time of application, must have a valid State of Ohio Level II Firefighter certification and State of Ohio Emergency Medical Technician certification and maintain until such time as the below listed Paramedic certification requirement is met.  Paramedic certification is preferred at time of appointment.
  • Within 30 months of the Paramedic class start date, must obtain and maintain State of Ohio Paramedic certification.
  • Upon enrollment in an Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification class, must obtain and maintain ACLS certification.
  • Must complete an approved Aircraft Rescue firefighting (ARFF) initial training program in accordance with Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) Part 139 and complete annual training in accordance with FAR 139.319.
  • Within one year of appointment, must obtain and maintain State of Ohio Fire Safety Inspector certification and Hazardous Materials Operations certification.

Background Investigation

Police and U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) fingerprint and background investigations are required to work at Dayton International Airport.


Promotional Qualifications

Must be a full-time permanent or part-time permanent employee in pay grade 119 (Wage) or below, pay grade 29 (Clerical) or below, or equivalent, and been employed for 6 consecutive months by the City of Dayton in a classified Civil Service position.  Identical scores will be broken by (1) seniority and (2) random selection method.


Open Competitive Applicants

Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination and providing documentary evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity. Identical scores will be broken by a random selection method.


Notes

Examination dates and times are subject to change. Calculators will be provided for the Civil Service examination.  Applicants appearing on the Promotional eligible list shall be considered for appointment prior to those on the Open Competitive list. Applicants are responsible for providing all necessary employment dates, experience, training, or any other requirements as stated in the Exam Announcement, in order for their application to be considered for certification and admittance to the examination process.

Police background investigation will be required. Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a drug screen. 

Effective July 15, 2019, the City of Dayton adopted the Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy (HR 1.03). Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. 

The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees subsequent to HR Policy 2.09.
