The State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) is currently seeking a qualified and experienced individual for the position of Supervising Nurse.

  • SCHEDULE: Full-time (40 hours), 2nd shift, Monday - Friday 4:00pm - 12:30am with rotating weekends and holidays.

    The Role:


    The Supervising Nurse will provide leadership and guidance in developing and maintaining nursing standards and enhancing for the delivery of essential services to our patient population within the Southwest CT Mental Health System.


    Job duties include, but are not limited to:

    • Oversees the clinical guidance of the 3 in patient units.
    • Makes rounds to all the units to ensure quality of care is provided to the clients.
    • Provide clinical guidance/ support to the nursing staff.
    • Conducts quarterly and annual performance evaluations.
    • Prepares reports concerning delivery of care / service.
    • Ensures all units are staffed to ensure safety of clients and staff.
    • Provide continued supervision of staff and respond to emergencies on the unit.
    • Assist in the orientation and support of new staff to facilitate a successful transition in new role.

        PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

        In a state agency this class is accountable for supervising nursing staff engaged in professional nursing activities.

        EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

        • Plans, organizes and directs health services for an assigned program, unit(s), facility or geographical area; 
        • Ensures that goals, objectives and work performed are consistent with standards and that quality care is provided to individuals; 
        • Provides clinical guidance to nursing staff; 
        • Selects, develops, motivates and evaluates staff; 
        • Conducts performance evaluations; 
        • Monitors the quality of documentation, records and other information concerning services and care; 
        • Ensures that resources are available to provide quality services;

        MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

        Four (4) years of experience as a Registered Professional Nurse in a hospital, regional, institutional or psychiatric setting.

        MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

        • A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing may be substituted for one (1) year of the General Experience.
        • A Master's degree in nursing may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.

        PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

        • Experience working with individual, and group dynamics, within a mental health facility.
        • Experience utilizing clear interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
        • Experience with physical, mental, and psychosocial disorders and evaluating client needs.
        • Experience with Microsoft Office computer software and the use of email.
        • Experience using an Electronic Medical Record.
        • Experience working in a union environment.

        SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

        • Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a current license or temporary permit to practice professional nursing in Connecticut.
        • Incumbents in this class may be required to be fluent in a foreign language or proficient in the use of the American Sign Language in certain designated positions.
        • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

        WORKING CONDITIONS

        Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain individuals; may have some exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and to risk of injury from assaultive/abusive individuals; may be exposed to disagreeable conditions.
