Introduction


The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (DOT), is now accepting applications for an exciting Transportation Engineer Technician Trainee position in the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, District 1 Surveys Section, in Rocky Hill.


The District 1 Surveys section performs various types of land surveying, including topographic mapping, boundary and construction surveys. Microstation/Bentley OpenRoads CADD (computer aided design and drafting) is utilized to prepare, revise and edit land surveys for mapping; develop topographic mapping and DTM’s (Digital Terrain Models) for future Highway and Railroad construction projects and support ongoing construction projects. 

Students who will be graduating with an Associate's degree or higher, in Engineering Technology or Construction Technology by the end of May 2024 are strongly encouraged to apply!

THE ROLE
Transportation Engineer Technician Trainees will learn to operate survey field instruments, such as conventional and robotic Total Stations, Auto and Digital Levels, and GPS receivers.

PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITY
Transportation Engineer Technician Trainees receive training to develop technical engineering skills and knowledge. After successfully completing a one-year training program, trainees are eligible for promotion to the target class of Transportation Engineer Technician


POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
  • Full-time, 40 hours per week
  • Monday through Friday schedule
  • First shift, 6:30 AM - 3:00 pm
  • Location: District 1, Rocky Hill, CT
  • P-4 (Engineering and Scientific) bargaining unit
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
  • Candidate must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License as incumbents in this class will be required to travel
  • Strong oral and written communication
  • Organizational and interpersonal skills

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Transportation this class is accountable for receiving on-the-job training in performing basic technical engineering work for the development of knowledge and skills to qualify for advancement in the field of construction engineering, surveying and materials testing.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs a wide variety of increasingly difficult duties as technical skills are acquired during course of training period.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of basic construction engineering theories, principles and methods;
  • Skill in use of drafting and calculating instruments and computer applications;
  • Considerable ability in performing mathematical computations;
  • Ability to prepare accurate drawings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

An Associate’s degree in engineering technology or construction technology.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

  • Possession of at least Level II certification in the Civil Engineering Technology-Transportation Program, Highway Construction Inspection or Highway Surveys from the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) may be substituted for the General Experience.
  • Possession of at least Level II certification in the Certified Survey Technician Program of the National Society of Professional Surveyors (Office Track for computer operators and Field Track for instrument operators) may be substituted for the Associate’s degree requirement.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of surveying and surveying equipment
  • Experience working with arithmetic, geometry and trigonometry in work or academic scenarios
  • Experience working as part of a team in work or academic scenarios

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some danger of injury or physical harm from highway or construction environments and a moderate degree of discomfort from exposure to year round weather conditions.
