At the DDS - South Region we currently are recruiting qualified candidates to fill two (2) full-time third shift Developmental Services Worker 2 vacancies located at the Transitional Unit in Meriden.

In this role, we would empower you to act as part of a team in an intensive programming effort designed for the care, guidance, supervision and training of individuals. Along with other duties as needed, we will have you;
  • Implement programs and procedures designed to achieve objectives of department in care of individuals with developmental disabilities
  • Provide guidance and instruction to individuals in development of desirable personal habits, hygiene and social relationships
  • Responsible for individuals health and safety
  • Incumbent in this position will be expected to travel
Position Highlights: 
  • These are full-time 70 hour/biweekly 3rd shift positions, with schedules of:
  • PCN 022239
    • 9:30 p.m. - 6:15 a.m., Friday through Monday.
    • Regular  Days Off - Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday
  • PCN 022641
    • 9:30 p.m. - 6:15 a.m., Saturday through Tuesday
    • Regular days off - Wednesday, Thursday & Friday
  • Must have a valid CT driver's license
  • Will be required to travel
  • However, work schedule flexibility is required in order to meet the demands of the job.

Selection Plan

In order to be considered for this job opening you must be a current State of CT employee of the agency listed above for at least six (6) months of full-time service or full-time equivalent service, absent any applicable collective bargaining language, and meet the Minimum Qualifications as listed on the job opening.  You must specify your qualifications on your application.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Developmental Services this class is accountable for acting as part of a team in an intensive programming effort designed for the care, guidance, supervision and training of individuals.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Implements programs and procedures designed to achieve objectives of department in care of individuals with developmental disabilities; 
  • Provides guidance and instructions to individuals in development of desirable personal habits, hygiene and social relationships; 
  • Responsible for individuals health and safety; 
  • Implements individual program plans; 
  • Reinforces appropriate individual behavior through modification techniques; 
  • Participates in preparation, serving and feeding of meals to individuals; 
  • Performs housekeeping duties necessary to maintain a clean and healthy environment for individuals; 
  • May lead and participate in social and recreational activities designed to develop individual potential; 
  • May act as shift charge; 
  • May attend interdisciplinary team meetings; 
  • May evaluate performance of subordinate staff; 
  • May provide orientation and basic inservice training to subordinate staff; 
  • May participate in special programs designed to fully develop potential of individuals; 
  • May administer first aid in emergency situations; 
  • May administer selected oral medications; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of
    • fundamentals of hygiene and physical training; 
    • safety, fire and first aid procedures; 
    • interdisciplinary process for development of individual programs; 
  • Considerable interpersonal skills; 
  • Skills
    • oral and written communication skills; 
    • in behavior management of individuals; 
  • Ability to
    • recognize and report behavioral change; 
    • develop a positive relationship with individuals; 
    • lead and participate in recreational and occupational activities; 
    • follow oral and written instruction.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of experience in the care and supervision of individuals with developmental disabilities at the level of a Developmental Services Worker 1 or equivalent experience in a human service field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to candidates with the following experience: 
  • Medication Certification
  • Experience providing counsel, comfort, or encouragement to individuals or families
  • Experience with electronic mail, word processing, and calendar and scheduling computer software
  • Experience working with Children and Adults with Autism
  • Experience working with non-verbal individuals with intellectual disabilities

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to obtain and maintain Medication Administration Certification from the Department of Developmental Services.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to be bilingual or fluent in American Sign Language.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license, Public Passenger Endorsement or Commercial Driver's license for designated positions.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must possess physical and emotional health for efficient performance of duties; a physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain individuals.
  • Incumbents in this class may have significant exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and to risk of injury from assaultive/abusive individuals.
  • Incumbents in this class may be exposed to strongly disagreeable conditions.
