The State of Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) is currently seeking multiple individuals for the position of Assistant Cook. We are seeking dedicated and compassionate individuals to join our dietary teams. See below for more on these opportunities!

  • SCHEDULE: All positions are full-time (37.5 hours weekly), first shift (5:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.), with various schedules which will include one weekend day. All schedules are 3-day work weeks.

    AS AN ASSISTANT COOK YOU WILL:
    • Serve clients/patients and staff meals
    • Prep salads, desserts, plating
    • Wipe counters, equipment and sanitize all production equipment
    • Sweep, mop, and restock shelves
    • Wash pots and pans
    • Assist in prepping of food and peeling vegetables

    DMHAS is a health care agency whose mission is to promote the overall health and wellness of persons with behavioral health needs through an integrated network of holistic, comprehensive, effective, and efficient services and supports that foster dignity, respect, and self-sufficiency in those we serve.

    CVH opened in 1868 as the State’s public hospital for the treatment of persons with mental illness. Today, CVH is the largest of DMHAS facilities, and includes 17 inpatient units over two campuses (Middletown and Hartford). The hospital includes both a general psychiatry and addiction services units. CVH provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care and substance abuse treatment, including treatment for pregnant women and persons with dual diagnoses. Specialty areas include geriatric and special services, an integrated network of comprehensive mental health services for older adults and young adult services. The facility also runs the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) program which addresses the needs of TBI survivors, including; reintegration into community living, independent living skills development, vocational and educational training, psychiatric, cognitive and neurological assessment and treatment, speech and physical rehabilitation as well as individual and family counseling.

    Blue Hills provides services to walk-ins and to referrals from family members, hospital ERs and inpatient units, area substance abuse and mental health clinics, community agencies, case managers, courts, probation, and other sources. Our Admissions Office, staffed by nurses and physicians 24/7, conducts an initial screening to determine the most appropriate level of care and treatment. Triage may be to our Acute or Rehabilitation unit, or to our Middletown campus or to a different facility if we do not provide or have bed availability of the required care. Blue Hills provides thorough assessments and individualized treatment planning through a comprehensive team of caring professionals in a welcoming and safe setting.     PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

    This class is accountable for performing a full range of basic tasks in the preparation and cooking of food.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    Performs a variety of basic tasks in preparing soups, salads, meats, vegetables, desserts, beverages, nourishments, etc.; cleans, washes, polishes pots, pans, dishes, silverware, kitchen equipment, floors, walls, etc.; operates kitchen machines and equipment; may participate in serving food and packing food for delivery; may receive training in the preparation of food on a large scale; may prepare food in the absence of the cook; assists with the receiving and storage of food; may assist in the preparation of production records; performs related duties as required.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

    Some knowledge of simple food preparation; some knowledge of liquid and dry weights and measures; some interpersonal skills; some oral and written communication skills; ability to follow instructions and learn routines; some mathematical ability.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Any experience and training which would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Experience on a food tray line meal delivery system.
    • Experience with sanitation practices in a food service environment. 
    • Experience preparing and serving complete meals per day in a food service environment.
    • Experience with a variety of appliances in a commercial production kitchen. 
    • Experience in a hospital setting.                                                           
    • Possess a Commercial Food Safety Certification, i.e.,ServSafe.
    • Experience with a variety of appliances in a commercial production kitchen.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
    2. Incumbents must be free from communicable diseases.
    3. A physical examination may be required.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights; may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment and utensils used in the kitchen and from patients/clients.
