The State of Connecticut, Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP), Division of Scientific Services (DSS), is currently recruiting for a Connecticut Careers Trainee (Health Care Professional) (40 Hour) with a target class of Forensic Science Examiner 1 to join our team within the Latent Prints Unit of the Identification Section of DSS located in Meriden, Connecticut.

The Connecticut Careers Trainee program consists of a 2-year training program for those with a bachelor's degree listed in the minimum qualifications below. Those with a master's degree in a related field will participate in a 1-year training program.

We are seeking individuals with a minimum of a bachelor's degree in forensic science, crime scene investigation, or closely related field.

This position is full-time, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday.

POSTION HIGHLIGHTS
As a trainee, you will conduct full-process examinations while working alongside lab professionals and forensic science examiners and will collaborate with law enforcement partners as needed.  Additionally, you will: 
  • Conduct examinations of submitted evidence and completion of written descriptions;
  • Examine photographs, lifts and negatives for identifiable impressions;
  • Conduct comparisons between the latent print and known impressions;
  • Operate the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) and Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS);
  • Maintain instrumentation and equipment and safeguarding laboratory physical evidence;
  • Handle materials and samples before and after analysis to maintain them for safekeeping;
  • Prepare comprehensive reports; 
  • Provide explanations and interpretations of results;
  • Testify in court as an expert witness;
  • Assist in training laboratory staff and law enforcement personnel;
  • Perform related duties as required.

DIVISION OF SCIENTIFIC SERVICES
The Division of Scientific Services (SS) provides forensic support to local, state and federal agencies throughout Connecticut. This division is divided into three sections: the Chemistry Section (including toxicology, controlled substances, and arson), the Biology/DNA Section, and the Identification Section (including computer crimes).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must be able to meet the experience and training requirements of the designated job class at the completion of the development program.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working on research assignments including the testing of equipment or software;
  • Experience analyzing, interpreting, and preparing data or reports;
  • Experience managing and completing tasks simultaneously while meeting deadlines;
  • Experience tracking, preparing and presenting data utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Experience processing and comparing latent prints.
