The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (DOT) is now accepting applications for exciting  Landscape Architecture/Landscape Design professional engineering paid internship roles (Seasonal Workerpositions in the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Division of Highway Design, Landscape Design Unit. Interns will work both in the field and in the office at our Headquarters in Newington, CT.

Preference will be given to applicants who graduated from a Bachelors’ or Masters’ degree program in Landscape Architecture or are currently enrolled in a Bachelors’ or Masters’ degree program in Landscape Architecture who will have completed at least their sophomore year by May 2024.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
  • Anticipated start date in May of 2024 and ending by August 31, 2024
  • Monday-Friday, first shift
  • 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, temporary (not eligible for benefits or paid holidays)
  • Location: based in Newington
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS ROLE
  • A driver's license is required

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Landscape Design Unit is responsible for the design and construction oversight of landscape components on a wide range of transportation projects.  The unit is also involved with the incorporation of special community features, pedestrian areas, and sustainable design elements into these projects.  The Landscape Design Unit plays an important role in the development of context sensitive transportation projects throughout Connecticut. 
Duties of a Landscape Architecture Summer Intern will include: 
  • Preparing the landscape design components of transportation projects including development of planting designs, specifications, and construction details for contract plans
  • Participating in field work with the Landscape Design Unit staff
  • Developing CAD generated landscape plans and details
  • Producing visual graphics
  • Assisting in other project development and management tasks
Interns will interact with Environmental Planners, Highway and Bridge designers, and Civil Engineers. Interns will work under the supervision of licensed landscape architects and gain exposure to the Connecticut DOT's project development and implementation process. Computer applications used may include MicroStation, ArcGIS, Microsoft Office, SharePoint, and other applications.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class performs tasks and duties of a seasonal nature by providing services to clients or the public.

Work areas covered by this class shall include the assignments and hourly rates as listed below:

Minimum and maximum hourly rates will be subject to the following criteria:

  • Returning Seasonal Workers may receive $.50 an hour additional compensation for each season of service up to the maximum hourly rate.

OR

  • Experienced workers in the specific functional area with another employer may be credited with such time on an equivalent basis to seasons worked and granted the same additional compensation up to the maximum hourly rate.
OR

  • Undergraduate or graduate students may be granted additional compensation of up to $.50 more per hour (up to the maximum hourly rate) for each full year of completed education on the basis of 30 semester hours equaling one (1) year.
NOTE: Determination of hourly rate is based on the above criteria. Additional compensation is based on only one criteria. It is not intended for individuals to receive additional compensation through application of the multiple criteria listed above.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERING:
  • Performs basic landscape architecture or engineering tasks under supervision; 
  • Prepares or reviews basic design plans; 
  • Performs mathematical computations and calculations; 
  • Uses CADD system and other computer applications; 
  • Collects and enters data; 
  • Accompanies engineers and landscape architects and designers on field reviews; 
  • Assists with preparation of reports; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any experience and training that could reasonably be expected to provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Enrolled in or graduated from, an accredited Bachelors’ or Masters’ degree program in Landscape Architecture.  For students currently enrolled, preference will be given to those who will have completed at least their sophomore year by May 2024.
  • Training or coursework in native plant communities and ecosystems.
  • Training or coursework in plant identification.
  • Training or coursework related to CAD and visualization software.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class assigned to recreational activities must be able to perform emergency first aid as needed and certain positions will require a current Standard First Aid Certificate.
  • Incumbents in this class assigned as bus drivers or operate a motor vehicle must possess and retain a current Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator License to drive a bus and/or a Motor Vehicle Operators License as necessary.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
