The State of Connecticut, Connecticut State Library (CSL), is currently accepting applications for the position of Maintainer (Route Delivery Driver), for the statewide deliverIT CT service.

THE ROLE:

The statewide deliverIT CT service is a busy statewide operation, which requires working on your feet for most of a 7.5-hr shift. Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Servicing a pre-determined delivery route
  • Sorting inbound and outgoing items to their proper destinations
  • Loading and sorting bins at a sorting facility
  • Loading and unloading a ¾ ton van
  • Regular maintenance functions
  • Duties determined by the Supervisor of Transportation
  • Performing related duties as required

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for performing basic tasks of an unskilled nature (e.g. requiring little prior experience or training; most tasks can be learned quickly on the job) in one or several of the following areas:

  • Building and equipment maintenance (operational and remedial);
  • Grounds care;
  • Food services;
  • Operation of trucks of less than five (5) ton capacity;
  • Parking garage.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES BY GENERAL WORK AREAS ALL AREAS

  • Keeps simple records and prepares reports (this should be related to duties listed previously and not a full-time office record keeping position); 
  • Performs related duties as required.

BUILDING AND EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE:

Performs preventive maintenance tasks including but not limited to the following: 

  • Checks gauges for established settings; 
  • Checks steam trap indicators; 
  • Checks belt tension (blowers, fans and rotating equipment); 
  • Changes filters (water, gas, HVACR, etc); 
  • Inspects doors for damage; 
  • Tightens chairs, tables, desks, door hinges, and cabinets and lubricates when necessary; 
  • Replaces castors; 
  • Cleans grease traps; 
  • May check temperatures against pre-established settings; 
  • May clean strainers and boilers; 
  • May replace ceiling tiles and loose floor tiles; 
  • May spot patch walls; 
  • May replace washers; 
  • May repair minor leaks in toilets, drinking fountains, etc.; 
  • May attach shelving and put up bulletin boards, pictures, etc.; 
  • May clean motor housings, ducts and other mechanical equipment; 
  • May act as a relief person for other maintenance employees; 
  • May perform custodial functions as required; 
  • May move furniture; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

FOOD SERVICES:

  • Assists in preparation, handling, serving, and distribution of food; 
  • Cleans food service areas including preparation, storage, delivery and recycling areas; 
  • Reads menu to determine type and quantity of food for patients and/or clients; 
  • Prepares simple foods such as beverages, pureed food, salads, toast, etc.; 
  • Prepares juices, coffee, etc.; 
  • Replenishes serving trays and condiments; 
  • Sets counters with utensils; 
  • Stocks shelves with supplies; 
  • May operate cash register, access control equipment, dish room equipment and other related food preparation equipment; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

GROUNDS CARE (OUTSIDE SERVICES):

  • Digs ditches; 
  • Shovels materials such as sand, stone, dirt, snow, etc; 
  • Operates hand, small power equipment, snowblowers, mowers and attachments; 
  • Cuts weeds or brush; 
  • Weeds gardens; 
  • Rakes fill, loam, grass or leaves; 
  • Moves, loads, unloads and distributes supplies and equipment; 
  • Cleans gutters, storm sewers and catch basins; 
  • Plants, fertilizes and limes vegetables, lawns, flowers, shrubs, etc. with detailed instruction from supervisor; 
  • Trims shrubs; 
  • May supervise parking to enforce regulations; 
  • May operate and perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on vehicles such as tractors, trailers, multiple power mowers, snow blowers and snow plows required in care of grounds, walks and roads; 
  • May sand and salt walkways; 
  • Picks up litter; 
  • Empties trash receptacles and maintains dumpster areas; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

MOTOR EQUIPMENT SERVICES:

  • Operates motor vehicles of less than a five ton capacity for messenger service, delivery service, stock work, grounds maintenance and the like; 
  • Loads and unloads vehicles; 
  • Maintains vehicles in good condition including cleaning, lubrication and preventive maintenance; 
  • Keeps records in connection with vehicles or materials carried; 
  • Supplies motor vehicles with gas, oil, water and other fluids; 
  • Loads and unloads vehicles; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

PARKING GARAGE:

  • Performs a variety of facility/garage support functions including cashiering functions; 
  • Operates and maintains revenue control equipment; 
  • Assists customer in use of automated revenue control equipment; 
  • Performs custodial tasks and maintenance of facility/garage; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

TRADES:

  • Assists a skilled worker by passing tools, carrying or lifting materials and running errands; 
  • Acts as a helper to a higher grade Maintainer or Qualified Craft Worker in more difficult tasks requiring special or greater skills; 
  • May perform semi-skilled tasks in carpentry, plumbing, painting, masonry, electrical work and other trades; 
  • May clean, oil and make minor adjustments to electrical, structural, mechanical, building and utility systems and other equipment; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any experience and training which provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Commercial Route Delivery Experience
  • Experience lifting items up to 45lbs for the duration of a 7.5-hour shift
  • Experience navigating statewide routes as a delivery driver using Global Positioning System (GPS)
  • Customer service experience

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.
  • A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and risk of injury from equipment and assaultive and/or abusive patients and/or clients.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to complete an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
