The State of Connecticut, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), Forestry Division is currently recruiting Seasonal Resource Assistants to work at either our Eastern District Headquarters in Marlborough, Connecticut or the Joseph Bigwood Forest Fire Headquarters in Middlebury, Connecticut with some work statewide as needed.



ROLE HIGHLIGHTS (SEE DETAILS IN EXAMPLES OF DUTIES)
As a Seasonal Resource Assistant in the Forestry Division, you will be assisting the Fire Supervisor and Forest Protection Staff in programmatic responsibilities of the division.

Schedule: First shift, up to full-time, Monday - Friday, with some weekends and possible overtime.

Anticipated Duration: 1,040 hours in duration, not to exceed one year. 

Salary: Depends on relevant education and/or experience. There are no benefits with this position.

MISSION OF DEEP'S FORESTRY DIVISION
To advance the health, use, conservation, and appreciation of Connecticut's forest resource.

We are a part of the Bureau of Natural Resources within the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP). The Bureau is charged with managing the State’s natural resources (particularly fish, wildlife, and forests) through a program of research, management, public education, and regulation. The Forestry Division is comprised of several important programs that work together to conserve and manage forests.

Connecticut's state foresters and their partners protect our forest resources by:

Encouraging private land owners to practice responsible long-term forest management (private landowners own 73% of Connecticut's forest, with more than two-thirds of that owned by families or individuals),
Protecting Connecticut's forest resources from the effects of fire, insects, disease, and misuse,
Providing accurate and timely information about Connecticut's forest resources,
Certifying forest practitioners,
Managing the State Forests, in which exist many large blocks of unfragmented forest land,
Engaging municipalities and citizens in the work of urban forestry, and
Promoting the local forest industry.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, as a limited duration employee, performs one or more of a variety of tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Work under the direction of Fire Control Officer in carrying out programmatic duties.  Duties will include wildfire suppression, equipment and facility maintenance, hazard mitigation work, hose washing and testing, improving road and fire pond access, invasive species control work, prescribed burn area preparation, prevention program involvement, and other work as needed.  Performs work related to the maintenance and operation of DEEP managed lands and facilities including, but not limited to painting, cleaning, mowing.  Operates necessary equipment; performs routine preventative maintenance on equipment; may drive fire response vehicles over 26,100 pounds.  May perform basic clerical duties.  These positions involve the use of machinery and power equipment such as lawn mowers, chain saws, brush cutters, pole pruners, leaf blowers, Bombardiers and UTVs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Ability to follow instructions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with fire/wildfire response;
  • Experience with building and maintaining fire equipment, chainsaws, GPS and/or Avenza;  
  • Possession of a CDL license or Q equivalent for fire apparatus.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class who are assigned as supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate.

2. Incumbents in this class may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following:

a. Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license.

b. Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides.

c. College training in a specific field.

d. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific State facilities.

3. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.

2. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
