The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is looking to hire an Environmental Protection Radiation Control Specialist in Hartford. This position will be within the Radiation Division's Diagnostic and Therapeutic X-Ray Unit.

POSITION DETAILS

The Radiation Division ensures the safe and secure possession, use, transportation, and disposal of radioactive material and radiation producing machinery. The Diagnostic and Therapeutic X-Ray unit is responsible for registration of facilities using x-ray and other radiation producing machines in the healing arts. The unit ensures devices are operated in compliance with Federal and Connecticut regulations in order to ensure radiation exposures to the general public and employees are maintained are safe levels, adverse impacts to the environment are minimized, and radiation exposures to patients is at the lowest practical level consistent with clinical needs.

Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
  • Conducting inspections of facilities for compliance with the requirements of the Mammography Quality Standards Act of 1992 and its amendments;
  • Conducting inspections for and providing necessary technical knowledge and experience to the Department of Public Health to ensure hospitals and outpatient facilities are conducting x-ray and other radiology procedures in a manner that will protect the health and safety of workers, the general public and patients in accordance with the requirements of federal and Connecticut regulations;
  • Performing radiation measurements as part of a field monitoring team supporting the Radiological Emergency Plan (REP) for nuclear facilities in the state;
  • Drafting informal enforcement actions to those facilities that utilize ionizing radiation (i.e. mammography and x-ray facilities);
  • Other necessary tasks as required.
Please note: The ideal candidate will be MQSA certified. We will provide the hired candidate the opportunity to successfully complete and pass the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) course work and MQSA certification administered by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) within the

This is a full-time, 35 hour per week position on first shift, Monday-Friday.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of specialized inspections of installations where devices emitting ionizing and non-ionizing radiation are used, handled or stored.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs specialized inspections of installations where sources of ionizing radiation, especially diagnostic X-ray machines, are used or operated; provides consultation in regard to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation control and related subjects; assists Environmental Protection Radiation Control Physicists in all related work; maintains and calibrates radiation detecting field instruments; may assist Environmental Protection Radiation Control Physicists in responding to incidents and accidents involving sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of principles of ionizing radiation and its measurement; knowledge of radiation detection instruments; knowledge of ionizing radiation control methods; knowledge of practices pertaining to reduction of excessive or unnecessary exposures to radiation; knowledge of Connecticut laws and regulations pertaining to control of sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation; knowledge of radiation protection standards and guides; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills;; ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Six (6) years of experience as an X-ray technician.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Incumbents must possess and retain certification and registration by the ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) as a Registered Technologist.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

1. College training with a major in the physical sciences may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
2. Graduation from an educational program accredited by a mechanism acceptable to ARRT for radiology may be substituted for the General Experience up to a maximum of two years.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in application and interpretation of regulations and standards pertaining to radiation producing machinery such as the use of x-ray, mammography, commuted tomography (CT), fluoroscopy, accelerator or radiation therapy in medical, veterinary, or dental facilities;
  • Experience in the safe use of x-ray, mammography, commuted tomography (CT), fluoroscopy, accelerator or radiation therapy in medical, dental, and /or veterinary facilities;
  • Experience with principles and practices in the field of radiation protection;
  • Experience working independently as well as part of a team;
  • Experience communicating risks of radiation to patients, parents, workers, or members of the public.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
3. Incumbents in this class are required to meet medical requirements and maintain qualification for respiratory protection.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbent may have significant exposure to ionizing radiation, toxic chemicals and fumes.
