Within Osbornedale State Park lies the hidden gem of the Kellogg Estate, the former home and gardens of philanthropist, businesswoman, and conservationist Frances Osborne Kellogg.  Osborne Homestead Museum celebrates her life through programs and tours; the museum includes a significant collection of antiques and fine arts and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Kellogg Environmental Center offers workshops, monthly art exhibits, nature activities, and programs for the general public. Throughout the year, the Center offers special weekend programs, nature walks, and family workshops. 

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS (See details under EXAMPLES OF DUTIES section)

Kellogg Estate Seasonal Resource Assistants will be working both sites and some of duties may include:

  • Giving guided tours of the Homestead and Historical Gardens,
  • Leading historical and/or environmental programs,
  • Light gardening,
  • Light cleaning,
  • Customer service including answering phones and emails, greeting visitors,
  • Light trail or maintenance work within the Estate or Osbornedale State Park,
  • Marketing and clerical work including creating flyers, writing press releases, collecting program & other data, creating social media posts and more!
Schedule: Flexible for part-time (24 or more hours) or full-time (40) hours; occasional evenings and at least 1 weekend day is required.

Anticipated Duration: A maximum of 1040 hours.

Salary: Depends on relevant education and/or experience. There are no benefits with this position.

Connecticut’s system of state parks and forests, state boat launches, and waterways, provide many opportunities for outdoor recreation for residents and visitors alike.  These range from camping and fishing to hiking, boating, and picnicking.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, as a limited duration employee, performs one or more of a variety of tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Assist with museum digital inventory project.  
  • Perform historical research to enhance interpretation.
  • Assist and lead guided tours of the Osborne Homestead Museum.
  • Assist special programs for families, children, and other groups visiting the Museum and Environmental Center, and the Estate grounds and adjacent Osbornedale State Park.
  • Assist with the general organization, upkeep, and maintenance of the museum and environmental center
  • Staff the museum and/or center for special events.
  • Assist with and develop/lead public and other programs which may be indoors, outside, or virtual.
  • Work on the grounds, in the museum, with educational programs, and with administrative duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Ability to follow instructions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A background in environmental education, natural resources conservation and/or local/US history,
  • Bilingual experience speaking Spanish, 
  • Experience communicating with diverse audiences through email, phone or in person,
  • Experience working independently, 
  • Interest working in the outdoors.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class who are assigned as supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate.

2. Incumbents in this class may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following:

a. Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license.

b. Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides.

c. College training in a specific field.

d. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific State facilities.

3. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.

2. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
