The Connecticut State Library (CSL) is currently accepting applications from our agency employees for a Librarian 1 - State Library position. 

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
  • Schedule: Part-Time (34 Hour), First Shift, Monday - Friday, Hybrid (a combination of in-office/telework based on operational needs)

THE ROLE
As a Librarian 1 - State Library, you will be dedicated to learning about the wide-ranging historical and cultural background of the people of Connecticut and the social, political, and governmental structures that have existed through time.

The successful candidate will possess enthusiasm for working with material in various mediums (print, original records, electronic, etc.), have a demonstrated ability to commit to long-term projects that build on the years of existing research of those before them, and:
  • Staff the History & Genealogy Unit reference desk;
  • Staff the Secured Collections Reading Area as needed;
  • Assist patrons with locating and using materials from the State Library secured collections as well as the State Archives;
  • Correspond with patrons using written and electronic formats to answer their queries;
  • Learn about the library's resources by updating existing research guides, and finding aids and creating or adding to these using primary source materials; and
  • Support efforts to digitize and make accessible the library's unique resources.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the State Library this class is accountable for independently performing the full range of professional library duties and providing professional library services.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Performs professional library duties in any of the following areas: cataloging, interlibrary loan, reference, bibliographic services and collection management of books, serial publications, computer files, documents, audiovisual and other materials;
  • Assists patrons in locating and obtaining materials;
  • Furnishes information on library activities, facilities, rules and services;
  • Explains and assists in use of reference sources, catalogs, indexes and automated data bases;
  • Describes or demonstrates procedures for searching catalog files;
  • Searches catalog files and shelves to locate information;
  • Assembles and arranges displays of books and other library materials;
  • Maintains reference and circulation materials;
  • Answers correspondence on special reference subjects;
  • May compile subject bibliographies;
  • May select, order, catalog and classify materials;
  • May review and update records retention and disposition schedules for state agencies;
  • May plan and direct or carry out special projects;
  • May operate a small law library;
  • May train assigned staff;
  • May conduct workshops;
  • May serve as liaison to library groups and organizations;
  • May compile reports and statistics;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of
    • professional principles and practices of library science including classification systems, reference sources and techniques, acquisition, cataloging and filing, bibliographic sources of information and library automation;
    • library administration principles and techniques;
  • Skills
    • interpersonal skills;
    • oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to
    • analyze and solve problems relating to library methods and procedures;
    • utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

A Master's degree in library science or information science from a library school accredited by the American Library Association.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience using print and electronic historical and genealogical themed research tools.
  • Experience using historical primary source materials.
  • Experience with staffing a public reference or research area.
  • Experience with organizing library collections.
  • Experience working with two or more patron groups in a library environment that combines or involves more than two separate disciplines.
