The State of Connecticut, Connecticut Technical Education and Career System (CTECS), is currently looking to hire a part time Maintainer for Vinal Technical High School in Middletown, CT. This on-site position is great for someone who is looking to work year-round with the New England seasonal elements specifically in grounds, building and custodial work.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

  • LOCATION: Vinal Technical High School in Middletown, CT
  • SHIFT: Part-time | first shift | 32.5 hours per week
  • SCHEDULE: 11AM – 6PM, Monday through Friday
  • NOTE: While CTECS follows a ten-month academic calendar, this position is year-round!

YOUR ROLE

The role of a Maintainer within CTECS includes a wide range of tasks to ensure the smooth operation and maintenance of the school facilities. The candidates selected for this position will be tasked with various duties, including, but not limited to:

  • Lawn care, such as mowing grass and managing weeds;
  • General maintenance of tools and equipment;
  • Moving, loading and unloading, and sometimes assembling, supplies and equipment;
  • Snow and ice removal during winter months to ensure safe passage for students, faculty, and visitors;
  • additional duties related to budling and groundskeeping, including manual lifting. 

The Maintainer's role is integral to the schools commitment to providing a safe and functional academic environment. While CTECS follows a ten-month academic calendar, this position is year-round and Maintainers must report to work in various conditions.

For over 100 years, CTECS has been the leading force in Career Technical Education (CTE) in the State of Connecticut. CTECS operates 17 diploma-granting technical high schools, one technical education center and two airframe mechanics and aircraft maintenance programs. The school system provides a direct employment pipeline for high school students and adult learners.

Vinal Technical High School is located in the Middletown, Connecticut. We have approximately 500 students from 27 towns and enroll grades 9-12. At Vinal Technical High School, students become prepared for the real world in every way possible. They learn high-demand technical skills, take college-prep classes and learn and develop career and employability skills.     PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

    In a state agency this class is accountable for performing basic tasks of an unskilled nature (e.g. requiring little prior experience or training; most tasks can be learned quickly on the job) in one or several of the following areas:

    • Building and equipment maintenance (operational and remedial);
    • Grounds care;
    • Food services;
    • Operation of trucks of less than five (5) ton capacity;
    • Parking garage.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES BY GENERAL WORK AREAS ALL AREAS:
    • Keeps simple records and prepares reports (related to duties listed);
    • Performs related duties as required.
    BUILDING AND EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE:
    • Performs preventive maintenance tasks including but not limited to the following:
    • Checks gauges for established settings;
    • Checks steam trap indicators;
    • Checks belt tension (blowers, fans and rotating equipment);
    • Changes filters (water, gas, HVACR, etc);
    • Inspects doors for damage;
    • Tightens chairs, tables, desks, door hinges, and cabinets and lubricates when necessary;
    • Replaces castors;
    • Cleans grease traps;
    • May check temperatures against pre-established settings;
    • May clean strainers and boilers;
    • May replace ceiling tiles and loose floor tiles;
    • May spot patch walls;
    • May replace washers;
    • May repair minor leaks in toilets, drinking fountains, etc.;
    • May attach shelving and put up bulletin boards, pictures, etc.;
    • May clean motor housings, ducts and other mechanical equipment;
    • May act as a relief person for other maintenance employees;
    • May perform custodial functions as required;
    • May move furniture;
    • Performs related duties as required.
    GROUNDS CARE (OUTSIDE SERVICES):
    • Digs ditches;
    • Shovels materials such as sand, stone, dirt, snow, etc;
    • Operates hand, small power equipment, snowblowers, mowers and attachments;
    • Cuts weeds or brush;
    • Weeds gardens;
    • Rakes fill, loam, grass or leaves;
    • Moves, loads, unloads and distributes supplies and equipment;
    • Cleans gutters, storm sewers and catch basins;
    • Plants, fertilizes and limes vegetables, lawns, flowers, shrubs, etc. with detailed instruction from supervisor;
    • Trims shrubs;
    • May supervise parking to enforce regulations;
    • May operate and perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on vehicles such as tractors, trailers, multiple power mowers, snow blowers and snow plows required in care of grounds, walks and roads;
    • May sand and salt walkways;
    • Picks up litter;
    • Empties trash receptacles and maintains dumpster areas;
    • Performs related duties as required.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Any experience and training which provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Maintenance experience in a school setting or large building.
    • Experience with lawn care, such as mowing grass and managing weeds and brush.
    • Experience removing snow and ice from stairways and walkways around large buildings.
    • Experience performing minor maintenance on tools and equipment used in daily work.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.
    • A physical examination may be required.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    • Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and risk of injury from equipment and assaultive and/or abusive patients and/or clients.
    • Incumbents in this class may be required to complete an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
