The State of Connecticut Department of Administrative Services (DAS), Bureau of Information Technology Solutions (BITS) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Information Technology Technician Trainee in Hartford, CT. This is an in-office position, and the incumbent will be required to travel to and access various State of Connecticut IT facilities as needed.

The Role:
The Infrastructure Services group within the Bureau of Information Technology Solutions is incorporating technical mentorship into our trainee hiring process, as we build the next generation of IT infrastructure professionals for the State of Connecticut. This role is ideal for early career, transition and retraining, or motivated individuals looking to gain hands-on experience in enterprise operations, network technologies, and data center environments.

Participants will join our 24/7 Command Center team where a portion of their time will be focused on receiving structured mentorship from experienced engineers, personalized development plans, and opportunities to explore multiple technology domains as you build a strong foundational skill set.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency information systems environment this class is accountable for receiving on the job training in performing basic technical work involving help desk functions, user support and assisting in application support.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Receives on the job training to perform tasks as outlined in the specification for the class of Information Technology Technician; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of
    • functioning and use of information systems; 
    • major concepts and terms used in the information technology profession; 
  • Skills
    • interpersonal skills; 
    • logic and analytical skills; 
  • Ability to
    • prepare and maintain accurate records; 
    • prepare written materials and reports; 
    • follow oral and written instructions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of experience in computer operations support or another computer related support area.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in management information systems, computer science, electrical engineering or information technology related area may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of two (2) years.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience, training, or academic internship in a Network Operations Center (NOC), Information Technology operations, incident response, enterprise support, or data center and field activities.
  • Experience coordinating with vendors and service providers to troubleshoot, escalate, and resolve technical issues following established procedures and service level agreements (SLAs).
  • Experience with Enterprise network monitoring and management tools, including network automation and performance monitoring platforms WhatsUp Gold, SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor, and Paessler Router Traffic Grapher (PRTG).
  • Experience or training in network infrastructure support, including ordering, configuring, deploying, and monitoring network equipment and telecommunications circuits.
  • Experience or training in Information Technology support, including service requests, change management and data center hardware support.
