THE ROLE
CTDOT is seeking an experienced transportation engineering professional to lead the Division of Facilities and Transit in the Bureau of Engineering and Construction. This position reports directly to the Transportation Assistant Chief Engineer. The ideal candidate will be an accomplished leader with a demonstrated record of achievement in the transportation sector. Superior skills in capital program delivery, staff development, consultant oversight, oral and written communications, problem-solving, and legal and regulatory compliance are considered critical to success in this role.
The Division Chief will lead a division of approximately 115 talented and dedicated professionals with a wide range of experience and skills, responsible for aspects of development and delivery of the capital program for the transportation system.
The Division of Facilities and Transit is organized into six units: Facilities Design, Transit Design, Architectural/Engineering/Construction (AEC) Applications, Environmental Compliance, Hydraulics and Drainage, and Soils and Foundations.
Facilities Design is a multidisciplinary design unit that provides in-house and consultant engineering design and technical support services in the areas of civil, architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering.
Transit Design is a multidisciplinary design unit that provides engineering design services and program management to support commuter and inter-city rail engineering for rail stations, rail maintenance facilities, track, signal, catenary, rail at-grade crossings, and other public transportation-initiated projects through use of consultant services.
AEC Applications develops and establishes electronic design standards and processes and supports computer-aided engineering applications with a focus on implementing Building Information Modeling (BIM) processes.
Environmental Compliance provides technical support and regulatory guidance to other Department units on matters related to hazardous waste and regulated contaminated materials.
Hydraulics and Drainage (H&D) provides specialized engineering, technical support, and policy advice on all storm water and water resource management issues related to the planning, permitting, design, construction, and maintenance of transportation facilities.
Soils and Foundations (S&F) provides design and review services on matters related to soil, rock, and foundations for the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of roads, bridges, and transportation facilities.
In this key role you will:
- Oversee and manage the six units that constitute the Division of Facilities and Transit;
- Help CTDOT adapt to evolving state and federal priorities relative to future transportation needs, issues, and best practices;
- Play an integral role in improving safety for all transportation network users;
- Work with your team to support and deliver critical aspects of Connecticut’s capital transportation program;
- Assist in implementation of CTDOT’s Strategic Plan;
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders regarding the design of transportation maintenance buildings and bus and rail public infrastructure;
- Oversee consultants and program managers performing studies and designs.
Applicants MUST possess active Professional Engineer (PE) licensure from the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection State Board of Examiners for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors consistent with C.G.S. §20-302, be available to travel to and attend training, conferences, public meetings, field reviews, etc., both within and outside of normal working hours when necessary, and possess and retain a valid Driver's license.
