The State of Connecticut, Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)is now accepting applications for Motor Vehicle Examiner positions. These roles are part-time, flexible, travel-based that offer a variety and engagement across multiple office locations. These positions are ideal for individuals who enjoy a change of scenery and a flexible work environment!

OUR TEAM
  • The Special Work Assignment Travel Team (SWATT) is a DMV initiative to support our agency workforce across the State of Connecticut! The SWATT was created in 2019 with the goal of helping our various branches maintain appropriate staffing levels, strictly on a temporary and as-needed basis, for when our team takes a vacation or is out sick. Location assignment could be planned in advance or a SWATT staff member could know about their location assignment the day of. SWATT Branch locations include Bridgeport, Hamden, New Britain, Norwich and Wethersfield, CT.
  • Due to operational needs, these temporary SWATT positions have changed to permanent part-time (34 hours per week) positions. Currently these positions assist with the initial intake of customers and perform motor vehicle transactions and should be proficient with operating computer systems. The incumbents may be required to work other branch locations and may be required to work overtime.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
  • Part-time (34 hours per week with a possibility of working up to 39 hours per week)
  • Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday: 9:00 am - 4:45 pm
  • Thursday: 10:30 am - 6:15 pm
  • Saturday: 7:45 am - 12:45 pm
  • Must be willing to travel. This position may require travel to different branch locations depending on agency needs. Travel would be 45 miles from the home location.
  • First shift
  • Office/On-Site (No telework)
THE ROLE
  • The Motor Vehicle Examiner positions are for the SWATT, where incumbents will be working in a fast-paced environment with a high volume of customer contact and money handling. We are looking for detail-oriented people with excellent customer service skills. 
  • These positions will assist with the initial intake of customers and will perform a range of motor vehicle transactions and should be proficient with operating computer systems. 
  • Incumbents may be required to work in other branch locations and may be required to work overtime. 
  • Incumbents must be willing to travel. 
  • This position requires travel to different branch locations, depending on agency needs.
  • You will be assigned a location based on your application preferences. 
  • We encourage applicants to select all areas they are both interested in and commutable to. These positions will require travel to other nearby DMV locations, based on agency needs. 
  • Employees who are part of SWATT receive mileage reimbursement for their travel.

    PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

    In the Department of Motor Vehicles central and branch offices this class is accountable for examining forms, applications and supporting documentation before granting issuance of a title, operator's license and/or registration.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    • Reviews and examines applications and supporting documents for operator licenses, vehicle registrations and certificates of title to ensure clear, complete and accurate information;
    • Performs limited restorations of driver licenses or motor vehicle registrations;
    • Verifies data such as insurance coverage, year, make, model, vehicle identification number, property tax liability and suspension records;
    • Determines proof of ownership and existence of encumbrances from information submitted;
    • Contacts municipal collectors of revenue to obtain clearance;
    • Prepares appropriate form letters advising of specific reasons for rejection or requesting additional information regarding correction of submitted data;
    • Compares data elements with automotive reference manuals and manufacturer's publications for verification;
    • Checks for erasures or omissions in typing;
    • Responds to inquiries from the public and co-workers and provides correct information on requirements and procedures;
    • Issues motor vehicle operator licenses containing photograph of applicant;
    • Collects fees;
    • Verifies and validates applications and supporting documentation;
    • Operates camera;
    • Die cuts and laminates photographs to licenses;
    • Makes minor adjustments to and performs routine maintenance on equipment;
    • Operates cash register and other office equipment such as calculators and computer terminals;
    • Schedules appointments;
    • Prepares financial documents and reports;
    • Balances cash and documents;
    • Processes registration renewals;
    • Examines title applications, ensures its completion and may process disposition requests submitted by garage owners;
    • Receives training in and may perform on a limited fill in basis full scale registration activities such as issuance of motor vehicle and boat registrations, toll plates, collection of title fees and sales tax, verification of proof of ownership and determination of appropriate registration transaction, etc;
    • May maintain records including approved and rejected applications;
    • May perform specific research assignments such as chain of ownership or lien information;
    • May clear duplicate identification lists;
    • May type;
    • Performs related duties as required.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

    Three (3) years of clerical experience.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

    One (1) year of the General Experience must have included clerical experience where a majority of the time involved face-to-face contact with the general public involving personal explanation or interpretation of products, policies or procedures or telephone customer service where the primary responsibility included providing information concerning or explaining programs/services or resolving problems.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

    College training may be substituted for General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of two (2) years.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Experience communicating and resolving escalated customer issues.
    • Experience reviewing legal documents, entering data and processing confidential information.
    • Experience processing cash, check, and credit card transactions and balancing a register.
    • Experience applying policies, procedures and making decisions independently.
    • Experience operating computers, using computer software applications and systems, and working with standard office equipment, such as printers, scanners, fax machines.
    • Experience working in a production environment with face-to-face customer service.
    • Experience coordinating workflows and conducting data checks to identify and correct errors.
    • Experience traveling to satellite locations for business operating needs.

    CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

    In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before individuals are certified for appointment.
