The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) invites qualified applicants to apply for Material Storage Supervisor 1 in the Materials Management Unit, located in Putnam. 

While the current vacancy is in Putnam, the resulting candidates list may be used for future appointments at Materials Management Stores locations statewide.

    • First shift, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM

    THE ROLE

    The Material Storage Supervisor 1 role will be accountable for acting as a working supervisor, independently performing a full range of various stores duties, manual and clerical, such as receiving, storing, issuing, inspecting, and inventory of stocked commodities and supplies. 

    Duties also include:

    • Schedule, assign, oversee, and review the work of staff
    • Provide staff training and assistance; conduct performance evaluations, and manage HR tasks
    • Manage stockroom operation in accordance with industry best practices and CTDOT requirements
    • Establish and maintain stock inventory balances; achieve maximum turnover rate and control of obsolescence; verify and inspect shipments for product quantity and quality; ensure adequate housekeeping and security of storage areas
    • Maintain perpetual inventory and related records in accordance with prescribed methods; assist in annual physical inventory and reconciliation process
    • Purchase and track non-stock commodities for immediate use
    • Manage winter commodities/products off-site
    • Manage a motor vehicle fueling station
    • Act as liaison with other operating units for customer service and product availability
    • Perform related duties as required

    Role Requirements:

    • While this position is primarily located in Putnam, the incumbent will be required to travel to other locations throughout the state.
    • Incumbents in this position must be willing to accept assignments to emergency duties when required, including snow and ice removal.  Mandatory winter overtime occurs November 1 through April 30 each year.

    PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

    This class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor in the operation of a large storeroom or a small warehouse; may supervise a major function of a very large warehouse in a large facility or agency (considering numbers supervised, inventory, and complexity).

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    • Plans unit workflow and determines priorities; schedules, assigns, oversees, and reviews work; 
    • Establishes and maintains unit procedures; 
    • Provides staff training and assistance; 
    • Conducts or assists in conducting performance evaluations; 
    • Acts as liaison with operating units, agencies, and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; 
    • Depending upon the location of a position, incumbents may perform tasks in one or more of such areas as receiving, shipping, storing, issuing, requisitioning or inventorying; 
    • Orders supplies and materials from vendors based on prescribed specifications; 
    • Achieves maximum turnover rate and control of obsolescence; 
    • Inspects for quantity and quality of all incoming supplies; 
    • Verifies shipments with vendors; 
    • Insures adequate housekeeping and security of storage areas; 
    • Operates, maintains and inspects equipment; 
    • Maintains inventory and makes reports; 
    • Codes and inventories furniture and equipment; 
    • May make recommendations on policies or standards; 
    • May prepare reports and correspondence; 
    • May enter data into a computer; 
    • Performs related duties as required.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

    • Knowledge of the principles and procedures of efficient warehousing and material handling including purchasing;

    • Supervisory ability.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

    Three (3) years of experience in stock or warehouse work or closely related work that could reasonably be expected to provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

    One (1) year of the General Experience must have involved the full range of stores duties, including receiving, storing, issuing, inventorying, inspecting, etc.

    NOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Storekeeper.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Experience supervising staff
    • Experience with Core-CT or other computerized purchasing and inventory management systems
    • Experience with warehouse and inventory control best practices
    • Experience with Forklift, Reach Truck, Bobcat, Floor Scrubber, and Payloader equipment
    • Experience using Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Excel, and Word
    • Experience with written and oral communications in a professional setting
    • Experience managing communication with internal customers

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permit and/or certifications.
    DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
    • Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever their services are required.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
    • A physical examination may be required.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    • Incumbents may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights; 
    • May be exposed to weather conditions and may be required to handle hazardous materials/chemicals.
